i have been out of the new hardware era for a while and would like to know what SLI stands for and actually does

i know it has somethin to do with dual videocards

maybe theres a post i didnt read or somethin but all the links or websites you can post would greatly help me what to buy when i build my next computer
 
SLI = Scalable Link Interface

The short version for most end users is that SLI allows you to have two video cards driving one monitor. Each card handles part of the load, either every other frame (AFR=Alternate Frame Rendering) or every other horizontal line (SFR=Split Frame Rendering).

You'll need a motherboard that supports SLI and two SLI-capable GPUs.

SLI stands for "Symmetric Link Interface", which basically allows you to slap together 2 "GT" or "Ultra" geforce 6 cards to boost 3d performance....

Yes it's Scalable Link Interface. 3dfx's SLI stood for Scan Line Interleave FYI.

and SFR doesn't do every other horizontal line, that's how 3dfx's SLI worked

SFR is Split Frame Rendering, one card does half of the frame the other card does the other half. Load balancing is done dynamically to determine how much of the frame goes to each card.

AFR is Alternate Frame Rendering, every other frame for each card.
