First time looking at setting up a CrossFire rig using my SAPPHIRE Radeon HD 6870 so my question is will I need the exact same model of card to do this? I found the model of card I have is no long available so can I look at similar models or will almost any 6870 with similar specs will do?

you can use any model. hell you can even use a 6850 if you wanted but i wouldn't recommend it since it would force the 6870 to run the same amount of shaders as the 6850. crossfire isn't as picky as SLI.
