SLI Cooling

If you look at the SLI pictures, it shows the two video cards back to back.
is this not pretty bad for cooling the back video card, especially if you are using a dual slot 6800u, where the top of the fan will be basically touching the back of the front one...?
maybe tgus us being a pretty dum question but it just looks as if the back card will get pretty hot.

Centrifugal blower fans work at much higher pressures than axial fans.
They are less hindered from having to suck/blow air through restrictive spaces.
I'm sure the benefits to this are obvious with the cards being so close together, but you're right, they could have implemented the SLI layout better.
 
Yeah I was thinking about this problem as well, I think I am going to get dual 6600gt's and OC them, so I'm guessing that will be a fair amount of heat, so I'm thinking im gonna have to drill another 120mm fan into the side of my case over those suckers.
 
would i definately need watercooling?
if so, where should i put stuff?
i want it internal, low maintanence, and not really for overclocking.
size is a factor.
i have a thermaltake tsunami dream, and so maybe in the hard drive cage at the front bottom for reservoir and pump, but what about fan and radiator?
or, if i am not overclocking, will i really need watercooling, even if they are in sli (6800gt or 6800 ultra).
also, quiteness is a factor.

A large heatsink made of cheese would be silent. Might also make your motherboard "yummy in the tummy".

yes but when the cheese melted, and hardened, it could become rather smelly rather quickly.
but serously.
how about drive bay coolers, or are these not powerful enough to coll two gpus. if i got two of them (one for each would this work)
they would have to be single drive bay onese though...
or should i just stick with a normal reserviour pump etc. at the bottom
bear in mind i am air cooling the cpu with a thermalright xp-120.

for the front yes, but wouldn't the back one no fit?
also, i have heard many bad reports on arctic coolers not fitting fully on the core and ram chips. however, have also heard many good reviews

Dood a watercooled and OCd SLI setup would be very nice. Thats some serious heat being put into the H2O though. I'd be curious to see WC temps once the SLI bridges become available and people actually try it.
 
Stagger the fans, pull the one on top out towards the front of the case so that its not blocked underneath by the second card.

That would probably do it.
 
As I understand it, Nvidia realized the issue during the development and has spaced the two PCI-E slots a bit further apart than normal.
 
Can you oc cards on SLI? I was under the impression they needed to stay at stock speeds, and if that is the case extra cooling isn't going to do a whole lot for you.

When I buy my second card (I only plan on buying one at first, then adding another when $$$ allows) I'll probably add an Aqua Computer Aquagrafix 6800 to both. That block seems to be pretty thin, but if there's a lot of heat I'll probably make 2 seperate loops.

Depends on the cheeze. Some cheeses have better cooling properties than others. Take cheddar for example. Some people wrongly believe that cheddar cools better than muenster...however, meunster has a worse smell than a cheese like roquefort. :D
 
or indeed you could use a very thick gloopy cheese like camembert as an excellent thermal paste, to enhance the lactate heat transefer between cheddar and cpu :confused: :confused:

Cheese cooling is clearly a phase change system, and belongs into th extreme cooling forum :D
Also, "I have to log, mouse problems", might get a totally new meaning. :p
