sleeving fans

i have 3 nexus black and white 120mm fans that arent sleeved .. and i have 2 that are .. the 2 that are just have a 3 pin connector ..
while the ones that arent sleeved have 4 pin and 3 pin .. i wanna get rid of the 4 pins and just make it a 3 pin fan connector like the ones that i bought sleeved .. i have sleeving here .. how hard is it to do .. i have never done it before
 
You can't convert a 4-pin fan into a 3-pin fan while retaining the RPM feature. 4 pin fans don't have RPM sensing built-in.

However, if you want to connect them to the motherboard for power, it is really easy.

Just cut off the 4-pin connector so you're left with a fan with a red wire and a black wire. Look at your existing 3-pin fans and see which position each wire goes in. You'll need to rape the end off a dead 3-pin fi you don't already have the ends and pins.

well the nexus fans have a 3 pin .. black yellow red .. its just that there is also a 2 - 4 pin connectors on there as well .. but they are all in a chain .. ill take a pic in a minute of what i mean
 
When you plug your nexus fans into a molex power lead (the 4 pin one) you're losing your RPM sensing capabilities (the job of the yellow wire).

IF you're not using rpm sensing capabilities anyway, it's very easy to do.

With the Nexus fans, to make them into just the 3 pin connector you will really need to do a little soldering. Because the 4 pin molex is between the fan and the 3 pin, with the yellow rpm wire going directly to the 3 pin you are going to have to cut the 4 pin off, and the resolder the wires back together.

Cut away the connector and shorten the red and black wires so that they overlap by about 1/16" (5mm or so). Strip them all back and tin with your solder (melt a little solder onto all the parts to be joined). Slip a piece of heatshrink over one each of the red and black wires. Melt the two pairs together with the iron, slip the heatshrink over the joint and shrink with whatever your prefered method is (lighter held a little away, heatgun, shaft of soldering iron etc).

If you need to remove the 3 pin plug to get your sleeving over, pull the little tabs on the back out very gently with a pin or something similar, and slide the wire out of the plug. Repeat with all wires. Sleeve and reinsert pins into plug the right way around.
