So Haswell-E arrived, and upon a few brief considerations I decided not to get it. The difference from 5960x and my current i7 980x is about 70%. Hardly worth it.

So next in my consideration is perhaps the Skylake E. But I don't see it anywhere on any roadmap. Will there even be one? Does anyone know?

Skyake-E probably isn't going to come out for another 2 years. Roadmaps typically only go out to +5 quarters. You'd probably want Broadwell-E which is going to be out in a year or maybe Q1 2016. Not including the fact that it will have moar cores, it will be probably twice as fast IPC vs. Gulftown.

Hmm.. I suppose Im a bit out of the loop but I actually did think they release the Extreme versions before the rest? Or was that just back in the day, or never even?

No extreme versions are after the mainstream version. Think of Haswell. The desktop haswell chip was released on June 2, 2013 with the extreme version August 29, 2014.

I'm waiting for skylake-e as well. Really want to try out ddr4 on triple monitors, but the 4k benchmarks I've seen just don't show that much gain. Broadwell-e won't be that much different than Haswell-e, so I'm waiting for the change to skylake architecture.
