anyone know of any utilities or a way to take a single drive and add an idential drive to it so that I can have a raid 1 array (mirroring)?

I have an abit ipro35 motherboard with the ich9 controller.

I have only used RAID 5 and RAID 0 so I am not totally positive about RAID 1 but usually you have to have two blank or empty drives in order to set up RAID 1 because the RAID controller needs to put some info on to the drives.
Try using Acronis to back up the drive in to an image, then setup your RAID 1 then just re-image your machine with the backup image you made and you should be all set.

do you know if the home edition 11 of acronis does bare metal restores?

I went ahead and bought the workstation version which touts bare metal restores instead. I did this because I like the network option for restoring (i have a very large home server).

Be sure to install the raid drivers prior to making your backup, if you have not already.. Or you could end up wasting your time..

Highpoint Controllers do this natively, you setup a Mirroring Array, and you can select if one already has data on it and it will duplicate it.

Last time I was setting up a Raid with an Intel ICHR controller, it didn't look like it had this ability.

i believe that the ICH8R allowed the user to configure a single drive as `raid ready'. Migrating from `raid ready' to RAID-1 was possible without data loss. The OP could have configured his new drive as `raid ready', copied the old drive to this, and then migrated from `raid ready' to RAID-1. Of course, making a backup beforehand is always advisable and apparently the OP went with the safer route of backup and restore.
