I have only played one game on my PC since 1998 and that's Counterstrike. It's all I like, and all I have time for. With this in mind, I just need to know which is the best card to play CS2 (HL2) at 1600x1200 (Dell FP2001 monitor) with as much eye candy as I can throw at it.

Specs: P4@ 3.6Gig
1 Gig Corsair XMS
Raptor Boot drive

so 6800 series or X800?

I know 1600x1200 is going to tax it but after playing CS 1.6 on it with all custom models and eveyrthing cranked, I can't step down a notch in resolution. My 9800Pro AIW eats it up right now, but I know CS:S is just killing 9800's so I need a new card, unless the beta isn't optimized yet for FPS.
 
Well since they are the same price, wouldnt you rather have 16pipelines vs 12pipelines. Sortof like getting a Corvette and asking them to be a 4 cylinder engine in it....
 
This is every where man... GT is better than a pro but XT:pE is better than a 6800Ultra.

XT:pe is your first choice but all the 16 pipe cards seem to eat the game for breakfast.
 
I don't think you can go wrong with any high end cards that just came out, its cs:source btw. I play it in 1600x1200 high quality, 6x/4x all settings maxed.

I didn't notice how similar our computers were, I just upgraded from a 9800 too
 
Actually the 6800 ultra is ahead in CS in all res and all aa and af levels

Now THAT I hadn't seen yet. I was an Nvidiot all the way until I finally hopped on the 9700Pro bandwagon, and have stayed there. The IQ is great but it seems Nvidia has gotten their sh*t straight with these 6800's.

So a GT will run 1600x1200 with eye candy is CS:Steam huh? Won't even have to go Ultra eh?.. me likes.

I didn't post this in GenMay but we lost our house in Hurricane Jeanne so I should be getting an insurance check for some of my damaged PC stuff. My cube and FP2001 were safe, but I lost some optical drives and some loose CPU's. With that check it's time to sell my 9800Pro AIW and get ready for the new CS.

Hopefully, it will be released soon, as long as Vivendi doesn't sit on it lol
 
when you say CS2, you mean the CS mod for HL2....since HL2 is based on DX9, so the ATI cards will be slightly better(3dmark 2005 just came out and it's also dx9)....THE XTPE will kick butt. But the GT is another really good card. XT pro should be on par with the GT even with 4 less pipes ..... so if you have the money, go for the PE, otherwise a GT is good choice.

If you only care about CS:Source performance, the x800 XT-PE is a little faster than the 6800 Ultra Extreme. Assuming you can find one to buy, and can afford the price tag of course.

But if you can't afford to spend that much, the 6800 GT often beats the x800 Pro on CS:Source. In all fairness, its antialiasing performance is faster, though. The 6800 Ultra would most closely compete to the x800 XT, which isn't included in the test.

So basically, the x800 Pro is an all-around loser to the 6800 GT in CS:Source, along with Far Cry and Doom 3. Basically every time a demanding graphics engine shows up, it loses to the similarly priced 6800 GT.

One thing in the x800 Pro's favor is that I've seen them for cheaper than the 6800 GT every once in a while.

The only thing the new beta drivers are optimized for is 3dmark05.

Oh sir this is where you are so wrong.

Doom 3 = 6800 series hands down

However ..

HL2 = Will perform pretty much the same on all new cards...

6800 owned the x800 series on D3 because Doom 3 was OpenGL and ATi sucks the donkey when it comes to OpenGL. Both companies perform extremely well on dx ... so... the answer would be.. any high end card will be great for HL2.
