Simple Question (hopefully) about Raid 1

I currently have a system with 2 drives configured in Raid 1. I originally did this to have a backup of a very large amount of data (mostly media etc.). I have decided now that I do not necessarily need the redundancy benefit of the Raid 1. After reading a number of posts on this forum (thanks all), I am now more inclined to just do regular backups to the second drive instead of using it to mirror. I'm considering doing this because it will allow me to go back to a point in time in case a file gets corrupted (virus etc.) or destroyed etc..

I will also be doing a fresh reload of all my system software etc. because there are some system issues that I need to resolve which can only be resolved with a clean install.

My question is....If I remove one of the drives in a Raid 1 array and just plug it into a new machine (or my current machine after the fresh OS install) will the data be available? Or do I need to move the data from the Raid 1 to another disk (that's not configured in a Raid Array) first.

Note: I would just try this out myself by just sticking one of the mirrored disks into another machine. However, unfortunately, I don't have access to another machine right now. I also did a search thru the other posts here and I see all kinds of great information on setting up arrays etc. but nothing about what to do in this type of situation (at least not that I could find).

Any thoughts are appreciated....

I did a some more searching and it appears that if I'm using the same raid controller and motherboard that I should okay. In other words, I would still be able to access the data on just one of my RAID1 drives after a reload of the OS. I would then want to reformat the other drive that was originally on the RAID1 for backups etc.

Can anyone verify that this should work?
