Simple Core2 Temp Question

I know the C2D temp thing has been done to death, but I have a really simple question. From what I've read so far CoreTemp tests the actual diode temp on the chip itself, while most other tools use the temp reported by the motherboard, which is why CoreTemp is always about 15 degrees higher. That's fine, but so far I haven't found the answer to what I think should be an obvious question: if intel states at the thermal spec is 61.4, is that using the "diode temp" from CoreTemp or the mb temp from most other utils?
 
This is how i see it , why do laptops have more leway than desktops.

I see it as it being a 65nm chip and if a 65nm chip can withstand 100c in a laptop then i think it can do the same in a desktop.

This is how I check it , I make sure its mounted properly and then checking it on load and see if the fins of the hsf gets hot , if it does then you know its dissipating heat. If it burns you then its no good and you should try to clock down.

Another thing the system temps should reflect the cpu temp and if the cpu temp shows 50c and the system temp shows 29c then you average the pair and take it from there.

I have a overclocked E6600 working at 3.55ghz 24/7 , the system temps are 29c idle and cpu is at 50c idle (core temp is the same) now if i minus 15c it still puts me to 35c.

I have seen the cpu go to 94c and even then it was working fine, my advice dont worry especially if you have a retail cpu.
 
Well...looks like the obvious question is still not answered...or even addressed for that matter.

Per my other thread HERE Intel claims that the max temp for the E6300 is "measured at the geometric center on the topside of the processor integrated heat spreader."

This is not the same location that CoreTemp uses, so it appears that CoreTemp would not be the program to use if you are attempting to keep your CPU below the suggested max temp as defined by Intel.

It would be nice if there was a solid answer for this question, since I'm no professional.
 
Thanks for the replies, I didn't see your post chargedmr2, but that seems to pretty much answer my question. So far I've barely hit 45 degrees (using SpeedFan and various other temp utils) and that's oced on stock air with coretemp, which according to the Intel specs is well below the limits, plus I'm sure this cpu can handle more than 61 degrees anyways. As for touching the heatsink, that's basically what I've been doing. Thanks for the info, I think I'm ready to try a little bit faster now.

Ok, after reading the rest of that other post I've come to the conclusion that I don't know much about anything. So 61 is the highest it should be during a full load, but not at all the max? I've had it at 65 for a few minutes at a time and it's never been a problem. And during that time the heatsink is barely warm to the touch. If I run TAT while it's OCed it gets to around 65, but it gets just as high if I run TAT at stock speeds, though the idles are slightly different. So what should I be looking at to make sure I don't fry anything?
