Im building a PC for college that might be somewhat too much for an SFF but would like some ppl's considerations before I make up my mind. It will have an x2 3800 or the conroe equivalent, 2GB RAM,74GB Raptor,500GB WD hdd,x1900xt(also wondering if the HIS version worth it),soundcard. I would prefer to keep this thing in an sg-01 from silverstone, because I just dont like the qpack looks. If this doesn't work I suppose I'll go with the new Lian Li, but I really would prefer the sg01. My first concern is could one put a heatsink that will handle all of the heat output of a slightly overclocked conroe or X2? The other concern is if the GPU will be well vented enough in its location and what GPU HSF I could place in there to keep it in check. (I wouldnt mind buying the ICEQ from HIS if it works well enough in this configuration). Any would be appreciated.

PS. - Has anyone modded a window onto this thing and actually made it look good?
 
I modded a rad onto mine? lol, I have a watercooled sg01.

I'd say get a zalman flower cooler or NT-06 for the cpu heatsink. Don't know how to tackle the ventillation problem on the case though. I have 2 120x38mm panaflos pulling air at the full 12v so I don't worry about it.

The thermaltake lanbox has a window and it looks nice. You could look into that too. I also personally like the new lian-li case. If I weren't planning on building a custom case, I'd buy it. Great price for a sexy look.
 
get the nt06, it is literally the best option with an air-cooled sg01. just make sure that your psu has a bottom draw 120mm fan. the nt06 will fit perfectly right up against the psu fan, so it runs passively and cools very well.

the gpu should have plenty of ventilation where it is, there are 2 fans right above it (assuming you fill the extra slot, it comes with 2 fans and one spot for another fan).

not sure if you'll have enough time before college to do conroe, cuz apparently there's some issues with the conroe matx boards so they're not going to be released until mid-late august (currently the only available one sucks. a lot.)
 
what about them not being released to mid/late august?! I have a SG01-E waiting here, with most of the parts I need waiting for conroe! Where did you hear this madness? Gah...
 
You are forcing me to look at AM2's now, that x2 4600 is looking ok at $224... I was gonna get an E6400, but now this info on these conroe matx boards is making me change my mind. Is the AM2 Tforce as good as the 939 one?
 
no uATX conroe :confused: that sucks!

About the nt06; isnt it alot of heat to toss into the PSU, I mean isnt it known that a PSU looses its efficiency in hotter conditions? But I guess if it works for you guys then thats obviously not enough heat to worry about. However does this actually end up cooling a dual core CPU well enough?

My idea was to maybe mod some ducting into the side of the case to fix this PSU issue, has this been done before?

Also just curious how are you cooling this thing w/ water. Where are you fitting all the parts?
And wouldn't mainting it in such a small package be a horror story?

Sorry for the many questions, just want to know what are my best options to still have a powerful comp while in a small space, because we all know how small dorms can be. :rolleyes:
 
If that info is true then why are there 965 boards currently for sale? ICH-8 on an ATX vs mATX should be no different...

it should be fine, dworley is running his high end system in a sg01 with a nt06 (take a look at his sff gallery here: http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1024708&page=1&pp=20 ), and his temps are great. it's not enough heat to cause a psu to have problems unless the psu is low quality to begin with. dworley's running a x2 4800+ and 2 7900gtx's in his, and his system's doing great.

o yeah, here's a review of the nt06 combined with the sg01 from sfftech, it's pretty good :)

Keep in mind the SG01 has some heating troubles from time to time but the Lian Li one won't fit your video card without modding!
 
Hmm. I'm impressed by this pseudo-passive nt06. Just wondering how well my xp120 would work in its place. I believe its 63mm vs. the nt06's 78mm height. Any reports of this? O and on that conroe thing. It seems ( according to the conroe mobo thread on xtremesystems.org) that this southbridge IDE issue on conroe motherboards is not going to be such a problem since the boards will implement third party chips to handle the IDE channels. However I think I'm going to go with on of the energy efficient X2's and wait for news on woodcrest quad core CPU's for the server I might end up building at a much later time.
 
you'd need to make some sort of shroud between the xp120 to make it work nearly as well as the nt06, that 15mm gap is the difference between *all* of the air drawn by the psu being sucked through the heatsink and a fraction of the air being drawn through the heatsink.
 
ya, the qmicra has the best internal design, but it costs a LOT (like triple the cost of a sg01) and has questionable looks. some people like it, a lot of people dont. it's also big (about the same size as the lian-li).
 
350$ mATX case!!! NEVER!!! I will go with the sg01 and try ducting an xp120 to it. When I actually have the parts ill post pics and some numbers of its performance.
 
ya, if u already have the xp-120 you can just try that for a bit first and if it doesnt cool well enough for your liking then buy a nt06 :)
