Hello, I'm fairly new to after market cooling, and I have two questions that I'm hoping someone might answer.

I have a 2800+ running at stock speeds at the moment, and the heatsink is attatched to the die with a thermal strip that came with the cpu/heatsink combo. When i go to remove the thermal strip, is there a best way I should take it off, so I don't scratch the bottom of the heat sink? I know alchohol will get the residue off, but i'm not sure about the majority of the strip.

My other question is about applying the paste itself. I've read before about people putting too much on and damaging the cpu, but how should we know if it is two little. I nkow that a little will go a long way with this stuff, but it seems like with the size of the thermal strip, it needs a decent amount of space.

That "how to apply" goes for any thermal paste. I with the rest of this ENTIRE forum highly recommend Artic Silver 5.

Got mine from here for $5.99 shipped to my door. (yes you can get cheap shit from stores for 2.99 but spend the extra $2-3 and order some)

As for the pad, i've always jsut ripped it off with my fingernails, then used acetone to clean it up. maybe some tweezers to get a good grip.
 
I'm building my first machine right now and I've got myself in a dilema that relates to this subject... I originally installed the OEM P4 2.8E Prescott heatsink with the thermal pad AND Artic Silver before I read up and saw that you need to remove the stock thermal pad first. So I removed it and here I stand.

I got the pad off but created a few light surface scratches on the heatsink bottom. Not bad ones but quite a few light ones.

I realized I had applied too much paste so I cleaned the heatsink crevices and base, as well as the top of the CPU with 70% isopropyl alcohol. The paste also slightly dripped onto the front of the ceramic near the pin inserts. I also cleaned that with a light cloth and alcohol but made sure not to let any seep into the pin inserts.

I'm not too happy with myself right now and before I finish putting this together and boot it for the first time I figured I'd post here and get some expert opinions.

Heh, reminds me of my first time building a computer. I put thermal paste all over the top of my K6-2 450, way too much. Don't worry too much about it, just clean it off. CPUs are more durable than you think they are.

I highly recommend svc.com myself. Been using them for a while and they never failed me yet :)
