So I use my Nvidia GTX980 GPU w/ say, a Asus MG279Q Freesync display
whats the highest refresh rate I could run, or any reason it would not run tear free @ say, 100hz?

The monitors PG279Q and the MG279Q are identical other than Gsync right?

I can pickup a MG right now for a deal, but I run Nvidia GPU

It'll run at the 144Hz as normal, just without Freesync and that's it. If you want no tearing then you'll need to use traditional vsync.
 
I have an MG279Q with nvidia. I got the MG279Q on special deal so didnt want to pass it up, and am waiting for AMD 480 custom cards to come out.

I wanted Freesync mainly to remove tearing.

I was very surprised to find just by running at high fps there is no tearing anyway.

So yeah, I think if you can run 100hz/fps+ then you may not see any tearing.

I have a GTX 670 so turn down the graphics a fair bit, but yours will be much better with a 980

Actually, G-sync monitor also comes with ULMB, or ultra low motion blur, which is best used when already having high frame rates.

But otherwise, FreeSync is basically a normal monitor on an nVidia GPU.

Also, I wouldn't consider buying FreeSync monitor to go with nVidia GPU to be 'silly'. Adaptive Sync (the monitor half of FreeSync) is open standard after all, and there is often no Syncless versions of a lot of those monitors anyway, so buying the cheaper option when you don't care about the Sync is not stupid.

I fully expect all desktop monitors to eventually support FreeSync as a standard, so eventually this will become the norm regardless.

Choosing G-Sync monitor over FreeSync is a bit daft though, but not if the former is somehow cheaper than the latter.
