Hi,

I searched a little online and around the forums and I couldn't seem to find an answer to my question. I am planning on building a new PC in the next few days, including a 19" widescreen monitor. I play a lot of CS 1.6, and playing in wide screen mode sounds awful. Now, I was told Nvidia cards have an option to set the monitor to a 4:3 mode and put black bars on the sides, so you can play in a 4:3 resolution. Do ATI cards have this option? I was hoping to get a HD 4850, but the ability to switch to a 4:3 mode is kind of a deal breaker for me.

Anyways, thanks for the help.
 
1. Yes - since Catalyst 8.3 (I think that's the right driver version).

2. If you can, spend a little bit more and get a 22" widescreen monitor.

3. If you only want to play CS, an HD4850 is overkill on a 19" (or even 22") monitor. It could be worthwhile looking at getting something like an HD3850/3870 or 9600GT in order to afford a larger monitor. I can play Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines (uses an early, less-optimised build of the Source engine in HL2) at 1680x1050 at 3x3 supersampling, 16xAF without becoming GPU-limited on my 9600GT.

Of course, if you play more graphically-intensive games, the faster card might be worth it.

4. Why do you think playing in widescreen would be awful? Unless CS implements it by cutting the top off your view rather than adding to the sides ...

1. That's good to hear.

2. That might be something to consider, I'll have to look into how much more they are. I was going to get dual 19" monitors, one from Newegg, and one cheap from a friend who is selling his.

3. I was actually originally considering the 9600GT. I'm not only going to be playing CS, but that's where most of my gaming is, at least for now. I'll still dabble in the newer games when I have time. I also considered just bumping slightly up to the 9800GT. Totally open for suggestions though.

4. I've played 1.6 wide screen, it just doesn't look right. I've played CS competitively for a while(not so serious anymore), and switching would totally mess with my Chi, if you know what I mean.
 
ATi has fixed the scaling issue in their driver couples of version ago, you should be able to play a the game properly scaled to 4:3 screen ratio.
 
for 1.6 new pc? oh now waste of money
my old athlon 1700+ 256mb has on it 100fps :D
