There are alot of their cases that look really nice, and available for cheap off ebay. Wondering if ATX mobos could fit in alot of them with some modding.

Post linkage to mods :D

SGI Iris Indigo... <3 this tiny little machine... im going to be filling the right side with hd's and making it a ~1Tb file server for lan parties :)

needs a new mobo/chip/and hd's tho :(

being poor = teh suck

there have been some others, this topic comes up about once every two months or so... mashie i think it was, modded an O2 that came out real nice... i would have liked to do an O2 but they are quite expensive

Yeah I saw mashie's. The carbon fiber looks pro.

Does an ATX mobo fit into the Iris? Cuz if some on ebay I see are only like $20US and other working ones only a bit more and I'd really like to mod one. I just don't really know the dimensions. Do you have any other pics, like how the Iris' come apart besides front panel access that you posted?

I,ve always wanted an Iris also did the ATX mobo fit in there and how do they come apart? and what did you do about the PSU mounting?

taking the indigo apart is kinda weird... a mATX board fits very nicely... only concern is its length... a full atx could fit, but you would have to do a lot of cutting in the back

perfect fit... looks almost OEM :D

SGI 320's take a standard ATX with a few minor mods. If anyone needs an O2 with a perforated stainless steel frame PM me to discuss. I had other things come up and won't get around to finishing the mod on my O2 for awhile.

isnt the SGI 320 an ATX board anyway?

its like a dual PIII or something to that effect

My primary machine is in one of these:
sgi1.jpg

Looking at online specs, it's a case for an SGI Graphcluster. It shipped with dual 1 gig P3's.

As far as mods go, I haven't done much.
The case is already ATX, so I didn't need to pick up the dremel. I changed the front LED to a blue one. Also, I fabricated a fan bracket (3 120mm Sunons @ 5 volts) that is screwed down across the width of the case. Plenty of airflow now with those 120's in addition to the two 80's in the back that it came with.:D
Now that I think about it, I'm not going to do much more with it as I would like to keep it OEM looking.

SGI 320 is really close to a standard ATX. Possibly moving some mobo mounting bolts and IO panel area modification.

I re-aranged the front too to put all the opticals the proper way and the nexus next to the tape.

i REALLY want some of those SGI rackmount cases... i didnt have any money when they were on ebay

I didn't have enough money...I got mine before I anounced them to here, 2cpu and elsewhere (though I'm sure someone else saw them too). If I had the money both for the cases and the rails (cost more than the cases) I'd have every system I own in one.

The same guy that I bought mine from still sells them on ebay.

Damn eighteen! Yours is loaded! You probably needed that case for all the drive bays. Nice rack too. I don't have a rack (yet), so I stuck feet on the left side of the case and set it on my desk vertically.

Anyways... Here's the pics:

I just used some aluminum "L" bracket cut to the width of the case. Drilled and tapped some holes at the ends for mounting as well as for the fans. Of course you get to see my ugly/mismatched fan grilles and my messy wiring too.
And it looks like the fans are Sanyos instead of Sunons.

ok....now I fell in love with the SGI Indigo Iris case.!

:(

I`ve never done any mods at all though, so how difficult it would be to fit an NF7-S, 2 HDDs, 2 CD drives 4 fans and other stuff inside?

Can it be done like if I wanto upgrade my computer later I can switch components easily....?

I was browsing through ebay to check out the prices on these cases and found one being sold with a buyer who stated:

This item can be picked up from San Francisco, CA, for a $19 pickup fee. (This fee is taxable.)

Pickup fee??? what the hell, that sounds rediculous

Want to make me one? :) I've got a few nice sanyo 120mm's that would work nicely in just such a contraption. I'm sure I could squeeze it in somehow. Maybe I could make a little tunnel on the top for my wiring too.

The saint, I would like to fit in an ATX mobo into one aswell
I don't think you could get two or even one cdrom drive in well, and if you did without some good stealthing to make it look like oem it would look bad imo. And also, I think the hard part besides mounting would be cutting agp/pci slots.

I was looking at the sgi site and they have really cool cases for servers and workstations etc. Too bad they arent junk though so it would be hard to get ahold of any without finding someone with one thats really broken and they are trashing it on ebay as is.

How much did those rackmonuts cost off ebay? Broken/working/case only?

Cheers for linking to mine :D

There is another project starting here on an Sgi 02 case
http://forums.bit-tech.net/showthread.php?t=47872

I have two of the o2 cases here and I love them. They are the perfect size for mATX boards I would highly doubt you will be able to fit a full atx board in one.

which indigo? there are many SGI indigos... the IRIS Indigo? like mine?

or are you talking about the O2's?

either one you cant fit all that stuff...

and modding these type of cases never make upgrading easy since they were never meant to be used in the ways we are using them
