Hey all Looking at making a silent PC for my room and looking at the SG-03 And am looking at using the following.

E7300 (Cpu.)
ECS GF7100PVT-M3 (Mobo)
4 Gb DDR2 800 Kingston
Gigabyte 1gb 4850 Silent Pipe
I was wondering what were some good silent fans, VGA cards and cpu coolers.
I'm currently considering
1gb 4850 Gigabyte silent pipe.
2x Noctua S12-800
the CoolerMaster GeminII. (If it would fit under the psu)
 
HSF:
NT06, passive with a Silverstone Strider PSU

Fans:
- 1000RPM and lower fans are generally silent, dunno about the S12 but the P12 is audible without a resistor. There are some who say the P12 is silent.. but I can hear it (1200rpm; putting on any of the resistors eliminates the noise). Since the S12 is running at 800rpm, it should be audibly silent.
- Scythe Slip Stream 800rpm. SPCR reports clicking/ticking of the 800rpm.
- Nexus Real Silent Fan 1000rpm
- Sharkoon Golf Ball 1000rpm, will be getting mine tmrw but should be audibly silent.
- Blacknoise Noise Blocker, no reviews but has been mentioned on SPCR. The S1 at 750rpm should be audibly silent.

GPU:
1GB 4850? That sounds like one of the bad[der] ideas out there, and at $180 *gag*. You do NOT want to be passively cooling a 4850, not ever in hell especially if you want a quiet PC that doesn't require more work to dissipate heat from the case.
 
Get an EnzoTech Extreme instead of the SilverStone NT06 and also try to get a PSU with a 135mm or larger fan.

Use Scythe fans on the front.
 
Enzotech Ultra and the NT06 Lite and E are basically the same things, only the Ultra comes with a uselessly loud fan for more $. When you're passively cooling them, there isn't an ounce of difference. Get whatever is the cheapest find.

Or do the Noctua C12P mod from another member here, shave the top of the HSF til it matches the height of the PSU and passively cool it from there.

My 800rpms Slipstreams have no clicking or ticking at 800rpm.

There was some variance in our batch of samples, with some clicking more than others. Unless there was something wrong with the shipment we received, buying an SL model Slip Stream may be a bit of a crapshoot.

the 800rpm variant makes a clicking noise that isnt heard on the faster variants, even when the faster variants are undervolted down to the same speed as the 800rpm variant.

I had 800rpm Scythe Slipstreams and they were not as quiet as I had hoped. Got some Noctuas and aside from them moving a hell of a lot more air, they were also quieter. I'd suggest the Noctuas he posted in the first post.
 
The Slipstreams are quiet in and of themselves, but they cause a lot of turbulence so that's what makes the noise. Mine are audible but only just. Seagate HD whine drowns them out for the most part in my rig. :(
 
Yeah the problem with the SG03s is that they have a lot of wind turbulence inside them. They cool alright, but they are somewhat loud in the best of cases (from my experience).
 
I had (has) a SG03 and I just replaced it with a Antec NSK3480, and they are almost the same size.


And the 3480 has much more qualifications to be cool and quite!
If you're not "to set" on the SG03 I would recommend thinking again!

The taste is like the ass, divided, fortunately.

I personally think the 3480 has a clean look, and I don't think the SG03 is that great looking!

It's actually not that bad. Personally I don't care too much for the SG03 either. SG04 looks nicer (without the handle) but I still haven't seen one in the wild.
 
Okay, ive been thinking i might go a sugo2 or Microfly with silent fans and a coolermaster Gemini IIs for the cpu. as when i was looking at my current rig the two nosiest items are the CPU fan and the HDD. also i may go with something like the 4830 for the case

HDD vibrations is something you can't really avoid. If you don't get a HDD like the WD 6400AAKS (easy on noise and vibrations), you need to get a box that's got soft mounts for HDD. Like the NSK3480 or the Lian Li V350. I know it works quite well on the Antec but I have no experience with the Lian Li. And graphics card noise is another issue altogether...
 
As far as case noise the SG03 is a very quiet case when using the right case fans. I'm using the 'F' model Scythe Flex, which pushes more air and has a louder dba rating than the more commonly used 'E' model and the SG03 is very quiet. My SG03 rig, listed in my sig, is very quiet. :)

It differs very much wath we think is quiet.
My SG03 had Noctua S12-800 rpm connected with ulna-adapters and I had a Seasonic S12-II PSU, that is counted as one of the most quiet PSU's, but I didn't think it was quiet enough for me.

Quiet is a very subjective term. I have the S-Flex F on my TRUE and it is by no means quiet to my standards. It is only silent when it is run at 60% or lower; anything above that and noise increases relative to speed. At 100%, it is intolerable to me. This is in a Rocketfish with a solid front panel and a door in front of that panel.

Agreed. I don't understand the need to 'put it on the desk and show it to the world'... :rolleyes:

The 2 pics posted above are informative though, especially for people dissing the 3480. As I said before, it's not that bad.

Well, when you have a couple of cats and a couple of dogs getting the box off the floor and away from hair and dust is always nice. SFF units allow a person to put a box ontop of the desk without taking up a lot of real estate like large ATX boxes can. Each to their own as they say. :)

Indeed. I'm lucky I don't have cats and dogs. But my soon-to-be-2-year old boy really likes to press the power switch of my miniP180. Dang! But even then there is no way I'll put it on my desk (that'd be ridiculous, really, considering its size).
 
Okay i have decided to not bother with the Whole silent Issue and will be using a Sugo 2 for the build.
Just one question how long can the power supply be in the sugo? im looking at the zalman ZM750-HP which is 165cm in length, would this collide with the dvd drive?
Also what is a good after market cooler will be over clocking my e7300.

2) The length is fine
3) NT06, or Noctua C12P modded. Search for the mod, been posted here.
4) If you're going for the SG02 cuz you think it's gonna be more quiet, lol. Every case is the same when it comes to sound proofing - fans, material.
