Silencing Stock AMD Phenom 2 cooler

Hi

I have a quad core AMD Phenom processor based computer and the stock cooler is very noisy. Suppose i replace the stock fan with something like 80mm or 120mm fan and connect the fan to CPU fan header on motherboard , would it suffice ? The reason i am asking is that 80mm or 120mm fans are normally used for case cooling and are controlled by thermostat of motherboard where as CPU fan is controlled by a temperature on the processor. So if i put a case fan on a processor and it never goes beyong 2000 rpm then would be able to cool the processor at full throttle ?

How are you planning to mount the fan to the stock cooler? What case do you have? If you have room I'd recommend the Cooler Master Hyper 212+ It's under $30 on amazon and sometimes goes on sale for $20. If you plug a case fan into a cpu fan header it's going to still go by the temp of the processor. You could also control the speeds with the mobo's bios and just have it run quieter, unless you are overclocking or using your processor 100% or close to it long periods of time.

if you doing things on the cheap, a standard 120mm/92mm/80mm fan connected to the CPU fan header should be fine. most MBs have set profiles (silent, normal, full) for the CPU fan header. it'll be no different had you used the stock heatsink fan.

tho i recon the poster above has right idea, the CM 212+ is an excellent bang for buck cooler. it'll outperform the stock heatsink with ease.
 
The stock cooler, if you have the one with the copper heatpipes, is not noisy. Tell us what you have.
Also, maybe you do not have it set up properly yet. I have two Biostar boards with Phenom II cpus and if I reset the BIOS to defaults, then my cpu fan will run full speed. I have to go in and change the settings to have the board handle the cpu fan speed. There is a calibration that needs done so the board knows the lowest and highest speed for the fan. After it is set up properly the fan speed varies and is never noisy. Even at full speed those Phenom II coolers are not too loud.
 
The exact model i have is : AMD Phenom 2 955 Black Edition [Quad core] and the heat sink has heat pipes. The system idles at 3500 rpm and jumps to 5000 rpm even when watching youtube videos. The thing is that cooler is quite good and i never see the CPU temp beyond 40 degrees centigrade...but even the idle speed of fan @ 3500 rpm produces intense whirring noise. cooler master is almost 50$ in India and current not in my budget. I have made a fan adapter for 80mm fan on the stock 70mm fan because adapter is not available.
 
OK, I see now. Any fan at those speeds would be loud. My coolers seem to have a max speed around 3000 to 3500 or so from what I remember and they normally run in the 1500 to 2000 rpm range so they are quiet.

Did you check the BIOS? Maybe there are some settings that can help reduce the speed.

Also, how about a Zalman type fan speed controller? That would go between your stock fan and the header on the motherboard. The Zalman has a knob to adjust the fan speed so you can dial it back down to a more quiet level. Then you can keep your stock cooler in place.

edit: The Zalman is just one example. I know there are other brands and other fan controllers that would work too.

Wow, those speeds are high I'd definately would recheck the bios and see what you can do about the cpu fan speed. One of my builds has that cpu and when we used the stock cooler it was pretty quiet.
 
I have came across on two Phenom II 1090t, two slightly different fans on the cooler. The 1st one was making a lot of noise and would spin up to high speeds when the cpu got warm but not hot. The other stayed quite all the time. Compairing them, I found that the louder one had a more square fan blades. The quiter one had more of a sweep to then ends of the blades. We where able to get the louder one to be replaced thru AMD, but had to send the whole heatsink back to get the replacement.

So if you can wait, just contact AMD. If not get a replacement from a store. I think it took only a week from the time the loud one was sent to the replacement arrived. Then again AMD is just up the road in Austin for me.

hey guys, I replaced the stock fan on the stock cooler to a 80mm cooler master case fan. Noise is quite low at idle speed but the fan is not able to rev up quickly to more than 2000rpm when more heat is generated.

I have checked the BIOS and the processor fan control options are: PWM, Auto, and Voltage. I tried all three of them and noticed that during booting and also while shut down when a lot heat is generated, the fan is unable to rev up more than 2050 rpm . I think there is some kind of speed limit at 2000 rpm. I tried to benchmark the process with 'Windows Experience Index' and i get the overheat alarm within 5 secs. Temperature shoots to upto 80 D centigrade in less than 10 sec

I think i need to find a way remove the speed limit on this fan ? Any ideas ? The original fan had 4 wire header with PWM and maybe there is way to use PWM to quickly rev up the fan or remove the speed limit on the fan. Guys i need to remove the speed limit of this fan so that it can rev more than 2000rpm .. how to do that ??

I agree when i used my stock cooler it was quiet,must be something in bios to slow down speed.
