Side speakers under 150 each

What are some good speakers for under $150 each. I'm looking to buy two and pair with a quality subwoofer, DAC and amp.

I'm currently using a shitty, $100 Logitech 5.1 setup which really sucks.
 
At that price, the current recommendation is the JBL LSR305, which is an active monitor. Are you 100% set on passives + amp?
 
If I get the LSR305, what would bw a good subwoofer?

What DAC should I get? It must have optical input and 2.1 output.
 
The DAC doesn't need a dedicated .1 output to have a subwoofer.

So, before we suggest a sub, tell us:
  1. What are the room's dimensions?
  2. What will you be playing on the system?
  3. How loud do you like it?
  4. Total budget. Looks like you planned $300 for main speakers, not the whole system.
 
At 150 bucks price range, a separate DAC is total overkill unless your sound card really royally sucks.

I don't have a sound card. It fried and only outputs static or makes loud clicking noise. As I have to get a DAC, I might as well upgrade the speakers which suck anyway.

And $150 is for each main speaker, not the whole system.

1. It is a large room, but I will only be in a 6x6 space when playing anything.
2. I will connect a PC for games, videos and music and a turntable for music.
3. Fairly loud.
4. Maybe 500-600.

How would you connect a subwoofer without an output?
 
Some subwoofers will have an adjustable crossover built-in to them, with line out jacks to go to your amp (or powered speakers). So you would feed the subwoofer the line level signal first from your PC (or DAC).

So, in your situation, if you want a DAC and an amp to power passive speakers the connecting order would be:

PC --> USB cable --> DAC --> RCA cables --> Subwoofer --> RCA Cables --> Amp --> Speaker Wire --> Speakers

Then adjust your crossover on the subwoofer so it gets the lower frequency sounds you desire.

Swap RCA for XLR if you are getting fancy, I guess. Probably not worth it in your budget though :).

Another option is to get a receiver that has crossover capabilities. I bought a Marantz NR1403 which has a nice and small footprint. I had it slipped under a monitor stand, but now I've got my monitor on an Ergotron arm and the receiver looks even better underneath.

If your actual total budget is 500-600, you might consider the Vanatoo Transparent One's that I just purchased.

Most reviews seem to be quite positive for them, and many people say that their bass is sufficient without an amp, especially for near field. I'll be getting my pair tomorrow, so I can leave some impressions in a thread or something when I get them.

What DAC should I get for two LSR305s? Adding subwoofer later. Can you run both speakers off of a mini lin with an adapter? And if so, is it OK to do that in quality terms?

This is pushing your budget, but it's solid gear for the money. You could use the XLR outs to powered monitors & RCAs to a sub, though that would send bass to the LR speakers.

What's a mini lin?
