I'm new to the modding scene, and decided to post my first question on it here. (Feel special). :p Ever since I relocated my compy to under the desk, my temperatures have gone up slightly. I was considering getting a better HSF (I'm using stock that came with my 64 3000+), but when I saw the expense of getting something decent..I decided to ask about this first. I own an Antec SuperLanboy case and was wondering if it'd be feasible to cut a hole in the side window and install either a 92mm fan and/or a 80mm. I've found some guides to this online, but wanted to check first.
 
Yes, its possible. But at the same time risky with the Super Lanboy window. Mainly because the window is concaved. So if the fan is tightened to much or incorrectly, problems shall be had. Personally, I would add either a 92mm or a 120mm fan, the lanboy would look kind of tacky with an 80mm fan. Oh, be sure to use an LED fan, cause it will look much better overall =).
 
How much space do you have underneath your desk above the case? Maybe put it on top instead? Definitely less risky, cuz if you mess up that window..... ughhh.

yeh i'd go with the 120... large, moves alot of air, but best of all, quiet. Just my 2 cents tho...

I just got some Thermaltake Thunderblades for like 8 bucks a peice, very quiet fans.....................................................................

plus its got some LED's. Bling, bling, baby!!!


BTW, what kind of temperatures are you seeing?
 
This is kind of off topic, but I replaced my stock window fan with a heatsink fan that I got on sale for $3! What's neat about it is that it has a variable speed control knob (which i mounted onto the case) and has LED's that flash different colors on the front. So now the flashing LED lights light up the inside of the case. The fan was originally $30.00... I was kicking myself for not buying all the fans they had, because when I went back they were all gone :(

But yea, back on topic :p, I wouldn't worry to much about side fan's unless you really need it for a graphics card. My fan is located right next to my 6800 GT so that really helps exhaust the air, and I get really great temps with all stock stuff on the 6800. I would do like the others suggested and put in a 120 or something in the front and back.

My setup is so insane... I have 3 80mm fans in the front for intake, and one 120mm in the back to exhaust, and the PSU fan to exhaust. Then i have the side fan too, and obviously my CPU and GPU fan's. AND I have dual HD cooling fans... my computer is suprisingly quiet for all those fans! ;) But if I wanted to drop the side fan, I'd be fine, so don't worry about it.

Oh and just a tip... the more airflow, the more DUST. try to install some dust filters somehow... I did, and it's amazing all the dust that collects on it that would have been inside my case.

To kinick313: I was also looking at those Thermaltakes and Jab-tech for about $8. Looked like a pretty good deal to me. I don't know if a top blowhole would be a very good idea in my case though, I have about 1 1/2" between my PSU and my top DVD drive. My CPU temp is about 37C, up from 32, my system temp hasn't really changed much and my GPU has gone up about a degree (to 40C), but that's probably because it's OCed. ;)

To Matrox462: You might be right..the reason I was considering is because I was thinking about doing some overclocking, but that might not even happen in the near future. The SuperLanboy has two 120mm fans, one intake in front and an exaust in back. I also have my PSU fan which is exaust. Oh, my video card is a 6600GT.

Oh, so you have have two 120mm fans. That sounds like that should be fine! Is there enough space around the exahust and intake ports that it's not being blocked? If you have, say, the computer pushed too far back against the wall, the air flow will be restricted because it's hitting the wall.

Also, are your fans speed controlled? You can google for a program called SpeedFan which allows you to manually control the speed of fans that are hooked up to your motherboard and controlled there. I know that one of my fans thats directly connected to the motherboard always slows down by default, and I use SpeedFan at startup to put it to 100% speed.

Still though, your temps still sound fine :) I'm not completely sure though, since I'd imagine that the load temps are more important than idle...
 
yeah i'd go and drill out a blowhole on top, remove the warmer air at the top of the case. go with a 120 that moves at least 35-40 cfm
 
I'll tell u what the blowholes not for, and for that reason we cant ever go back to seaworld.
 
I put a 120 hole in the side and top of my s. lanboy pretty easy, but dont plan on using your top bay. I put a fan controller in mine.

^ yep put a 120mm intake on the side.....helped my case temp ALOT, dropped my case temp nearly 9*C
 
I think I'm probably going to go for a 120mm fan in the side. My temps went up about 7*C after I put it under my desk, and that's with all the fans on full speed. I do have SpeedFan, and that's what it's telling me. Load temps are about 45*C on my CPU and 47-48 on my video card. So far the Thermaltake Thunderblade is looking like a nice choice. Inexpensive and (supposedly) moves a lot of air.
