I originally posted this in Small Form Factor Systems (http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?p=1030956587#post1030956587) since nothing is OCd. I didn't want to cross post, but I have given it some time and it appears I won't be getting any help from there. Hopefully one of you guys can help :). Here is my original post:

Well I am probably just going to toss this system soon anyway, but until I get a replacement, any suggestions would be appreciated. Everyone loves a story with a post, so here is mine. I originally built my LAN comp:

aopen xcube edition case
aopen ux915g mobo
aopen FSP275-60CU(PF) PSU
evga geforce 6600
512mb ram (now 1 gig, and that is when the bad times started )

loooong time ago to haul to LANs and tourneys. It made its debut at the Winter 2004 CPL BYOC for some fun between matches heh. It has served me fine (for the most part) since then. I no longer play competitive FPS games or go to many LANs, so now it serves as a home LAN PC for when I have some friends over. Recently it has been lagging a bit so I took pity on my friends and upped the ram to 1gig. Performance went up which is nice... but now the stupid thing overheats!

Nothing bad like random shutdowns, but I was cautious and set it to alert me at lower than (normally) critical temps. About 1/2 the time when we get into a game of WoW, CS:S, DoD:S, or AoE3 (oh it REALLY hates AoE3! No idea why.) the mobo alert starts going off and I have to have them shut it down for a bit. I did manage to improve the situation by taking off the case and pointing a fan at the system as well as setting the system fans to always run at max, but this is hardly ideal. I was going to put an extra case fan in but... honestly... I can't find a place to put one. Everything is so crammed in there already. I was worried about the 275 PSU, but as far as I can tell, that is not stressed.

Any tips would be appreciated. I am in the middle of an upgrade on my main system (video card and mobo down, CPU and ram to go!) so I don't really have the funds to dump on a computer that, for the most part, only gets used by friends on the weekends.

An update on this from my original post, I also now have the harddrive outside the case. This again helps a bit, but it only a matter of time in most gaming sessions until the system starts speed stepping down and eventually the temp alert goes off. I could remove the RAM, but then I would be right back where I was before with the system being unable to keep up with a lot of the newer games we play now. WoW being one of the bigger ones. It really lags along in outland with 512mb.

Clean the heatsinks. Get faster fans. Reapply thermal grease.

Worked well enough. I still can't put the hard drive back in, or put the case back on, but now at least it doesn't speed step down or overheat during gaming sessions.

I am going to get one of those window air conditioners soon enough and that should help too. I keep my computers in my "lan room" over the garage which is connected to the attic that has lousy insulation and gets pretty warm in summer. Get a few of my friends in there on PCs and it will regularly go into the 80s. I have two central air and for some stupid reason it shares the upstairs AC and thermostat, not the downstairs (I guess it IS upstairs, but it is connected to the downstairs). So right now I have to alternate between freezing when I am upstairs or sweating when I am in the bonus room. I usually go with the second option which just makes the problem worse.

Anyway thanks for the idea, dunno why I didn't think of that on my own.

Your shuttle looks rather old. Mine is 1.5 years old. About 3 month ago it also started overheating. I opened it up and blew through it as hard as i could. After each blow i had to cough - it was that much dust in there.

But the most surprising bit came when i got my 7800gtx out... But i will leave the pleasure of finding out just how much dust that heatsink can hold for you :D just make sure you do it in the bathroom or outside ;)

After the procedure GPU idle dropped 20 degrees :D
