Shuttle SN26P Advice Wanted

I am very keen on purchasing the SN26P very soon, but I would like to know a couple of things first.

1) First off, does the barebones system (without any CPU, GPU, etc) not come with the heat pipes for SLI video card cooling? All the reviewers out there who tested this system before it was released bragged about the heat pipes, but I am getting the impression that it is an optional accessory, and I cannot find it available from any online retailers, nor from Shuttle.

2) Secondly, I am confident two BFG 7900GT OC would run good (with heat pipe cooling of course), but I was hoping I could get a couple of individuals to confirm that a setup of those 2 cards is stable in their own systems. Thanks!

3) Thirdly, I was just wondering if anyone knew where to get the best price for SN26P in Canada, as its a VERY pricy system and I can't justify spending $700CDN at NCIX unless I can do a price match.

Thanks for any advice anyone has!

P.S. anyone with knowledge of other SFF SLI setups (i can't find anything else), feel free to try to convert me!

2 > 7900GT OC's run fine in SLI w/o heatpipes. You could also put in a single 7950GX2 instead (even cooler/quieter).

I am rather surprised that those heat pipes were not put into production! But that is certainly awesome that two 7900GTs work fine in SLI w/o them!...what are their load temps?

Not sure really, I actually used 7800GT OC's in my SN26P a while back, but 7900GT OC's run cooler so...

IIRC the outer (less air flow) card ran in the high 70's versus the inner running in the 60's (celcius) under load.

7950GX2 does not work on that board. Why would it be quieter? Fans are tinier, aren't they?

I RMAed my sn26 back in jan from zipzoomfly, got a new one, only used it for a month before deciding to go with an sg01 instead cause I wanted a dedicated sound card and more upgrade options. so it was a brand new sn26 used for a month thats just been sitting in my closet, never got around to post it in the FS forum, pm me if you're interested in buying it, I have all original things that came with it, including box. and yes I was running 7900gts in sli in it (still using them in my current box) and idle temps are in the mid 50s and very quiet. the only thing missing is the ICE heatsink fan that you'll have to get from shuttle or ebay and I cut the right side of the cover off and put a plexi glass on it. I'm in the U.S. by the way.

7900GT OC's are louder than a 7950GX2, fans are the same. 7950GX2 runs at stock clocks vs OC 7900GT, where the fans run faster (louder). I bought 7900GT OC's based on many reviews that said they were just as quiet as the stock cards, well... they were, but not under load. Under load the fans are much louder in order to dissipate the extra heat of the greater clocks.

Also, the 7950GX2 has a better layout for cooling of the inner card compared to how the inner 7900GT OC would get starved of cool air (7950GX2 vents to rear duct).

I am interested. However, which ICE hsf you talkin of? the one for the CPU? (or the mysterious GPU one?)
Are there SLI mATX mobos available for that sg01?


Thats pretty awesome that the 7950GX2 works on this bad boy, but I'd rather buy one 7900GT now, and get a second a year or more from now when its half its current price...thats alot cheaper than the price of a 7950gx2 right now and probably not a big performance difference between the two setups.
 
ICE is the Shuttle cpu HSF.

The only mATX SLI is the eVGA board, I have it... meh.
 
Funny you should ask, I had switched over to the eVGA SLI mATX board and the SG01B case for a while... but I kept getting crashes... dunno why... said F it and switched back to the SN26P just the other day after dusting it off a bit. Running rock solid with a better OC once again. I love this little box. :D
 
really, my components are almost the same as yours. the only downside to switching to the sg01 is the size and noise, and you don't know how EASY it is to install/take out components inside the sn26 until you have worked on an sg01, what a pain and so many screws! I sure miss the sn26, only if they had a similar chassis but with 4 slots so I could do sli and xfi at the same time. now I know why they charge a premium.
 
I hate the crappy sound on the SN26P, but I found I really wasn't using the dedicated cards capabilities anyway since I was always on Vent/TS with a headset.
 
My SN26P was always 100% stable, even playing games for hours at a time!

I played through FEAR, QUAKE4 and COD2 on the SN26P with an FX-55 Clawhammer CPU and (2) 7800GTX cards in SLI.

I was concerned about the heat buildup and the GPU's but it was never a problem, I did add a small 40mm slim fan above the video cards but it was not necessary.

The 7800GTX cards ran very hot and require more power than 7900GT's, so you should be fine running (2) 7900GT's or even better with a 7950GX2!
 
Hey guys, Im back!

Thx for all the advice.

After doing alot of research I am seriously thinking of changing my mind on the SN26P and getting an mATX case with that evga SLI mATX mobo.

Dworley (and others) what do you think? Dworley I know you were heavily involved in the discussions on the thread for that evga sli mATX mobo. I still haven't finished reading through that whole thread, but it has me concerned about its quality and OC ability.

I think I want to put it in the Aspire X-QPack.

Basically what I want to figure out is:

1) is the evga mobo's 7.1 on board audio high quality (i've been using the 5.1 on my gigabyte with NF2 for 3 yrs now and havent experienced anything higher quality, although i know higher quality exists)

2) will i be able to OC an AMD X2 on that mobo? oh and what on earth was with the discussion on 1T vs 2T...which is better and why on earth couldn't anyone get the board to work with the better one? (im guessing it has something to do w/ 2000mhz hypertransport *shrug*)

3) the PSU in the QPack sucks, whats a high quality PSU that will fit in it? (wattage is not everything, dont try to tell me i need 600w, when the sn26p has a high quality 350w psu and can easily power dual core cpu and a high end SLI setup)

4) the QPack is loud from what i hear, and I want to put one small case fan on either side (2 total) near the front to suck air into the case to allow better airflow. With a good HSF on the CPU, large PSU fan and SLI setup.... like seriously, is that machine gonna sound like a jumbo jet? I gotta be able to sleep in the same room.

5) any opinions are welcome as to what i might be doing wrong... advice on a better case, or maybe you think im better off with the sn26p (there is no doubt in my mind it is an amazing case!)


These are questions I am trying to research myself and answer, and I don't expect anyone to go and research this for me. If you read through this and you happen to have some advice, I will be extatic.
