Shuttle PC Question

Will shuttle cases take normal micro-atx boards or are they special boards made for the Shuttle cases?
 
they are mitx.

the older shuttles dont allow you to change them, but i think the new one (j3) allows you to put your own mitx mobo in
 
Shuttle uses their own proprietary boards for their systems. Specs for comparison (off the top of my head):

Micro ATX: 244mm x 244mm, 4 slots
Shuttle board: ~200mm x ~285mm (W x D), 2 slots
Mini ITX: 170mm x 170mm, 1 slot

So the Shuttle form factor is midway between the other two in terms of size and expansion. mATX boards are physically too wide to fit in the cases by almost two inches. Mini ITX is small enough but I believe the mounting holes are incompatible, except for the newer J-series chassis as psypher5 mentioned.
 
The only problem in my experience with shuttle cases is the proprietary ice heat sink solution they use. So because this system uses a bolt down mechanism that attaches to the sheet metal under the motherboard, you will have to break these off and out with pliers.

I think shuttle uses a mini dtx form factor, which has dimensions 203 mm by 170 mm (8.0 by 6.7 inches.) versus a 6.7 x 6.7 board. So that is why they are able to get 2 expansion slots vs m-itx with one.

You also need to be careful of cpu placement and make sure your heatsink will clear the case where you are putting it.
 
It's not Mini-DTX. It's about as wide, but much deeper. There's no way you could cram 4 DIMM slots and an X58 chipset into a Mini-DTX board.

I think the new J-series use basically the same motherboard form factor, just with Mini-ITX (and presumably Mini-DTX) compatible mount points.
 
Ok thanks for the info guys, looks like that is pretty much out of the picture.. I am now looking at the Thermaltake Lanbox Lite and already know what I will be getting for components, question is what HS cooler should I get.. As this machine will mainly be a normal use pc box with some lite video editing and picture editing I will be going with an AMD Propus 630 processor. What would you recommend that would sit well in that case, is quiet, and will keep the cores cool when I do editing?
 
I own a thermaltake lanbox, that I brought 2 years ago now. Look for a low profile heatsink such as the nexus low profile one. Also make sure you get a modular PSU, as this case is a wire management nightmare. There isn't a lot of places to store them.

If your just looking at some lite work, you might even find a smaller case that might suite you better.
 
At at toss up right now between a mini-itx and m-atx... I would be using this pc mostly to serve up files and to do some video/photo editing but other than that the thing will most be used for normal pc work (i.e. word, internet, vpn access, etc). I am wondering if I should spend the money and build the little bit big m-atx box or should go with the ultra-smallish mini-itx with only a dual or triple core, low power processor..
