Should I wait for new chipsets ?

I want to upgrade and I was wondering should I upgrade now from my 2.2 Pentium 4 to a 3.2 Northwood and a P875 motherboard ? Or should I wait for the 975 Alderwood ,DDR 2, PCI-E Video Card and get a 3.2 Prescott instead ? Will the new systems make that much of a difference in speed ? I would also like a system with good overclock pontential.

Welcome to the forum.

I could be a troll and tell you to look at that one thread (think it's here), but instead I'll boil it down to this for you: Either make the leap now and get the best that the Northwood core has to offer, or, be an early adopter and be the first kid on the block with all the products you mentioned. This isn't necessarily what you want to do; just look at the fun the Prescott release is causing. There are hopes that the new socket will be a cure-all for Prescott's heat problems and maybe some of it's performance problems, but it's mostly unsubstantiated (except for the heat thing).

I'd say it depends on what kind of setup you have now. If all you'd be doing is getting a 3.2C and, say, an IC7 or IS7, then yes, I'd say go for it. Top it out on the Northwood core and its proven stability. But if you had to get all new RAM, a new video card, a new case, and so on and so forth, then yes, wait. You'll be able to save more money between now and April and you'll be able to upgrade your components for much longer, AND Intel will hopefully have ironed a few things out by LGA775.

Thanks Lst. I just want to do a few games and MS Office. I do like to Overclock though. So which would be best for that ?

i would wait for either platform. with the system you have now the minor change would not be worth the money. although some of the performance can be justified. i would not do it since a higher level of computing is around the corner.

this is like the movie colors when sean penn's character wanted to bust the gang member right when he saw him. but his partner said no we will wait. but sean was young and not experienced he just wanted to make a name. his partner explained it to him by this joke, that i cannot remember word for word but come close to the point.

"have you heard the joke about the bulls?"
"no"
"these two bulls on top of the hill saw a bunch of cows below. The young bull said lets go down and fuck one. the old bull said if you run down you will scare them all away and we will not fuck any. lets take our time going down the hill and fuck them all."

That's a good point. Coming from a 2.2B you wouldn't see THAT much of an improvement. I'd feel much better reccomending a 2.4C with hyperthreading - you'll reap the benefits of hyperthreading and be able to save a little cash for your next upgrade. Of course, if your current chipset doesn't support hyperthreading or an 800 Mhz FSB, then you'd have to get a new mobo, and things might get expensive. You might be better off sitting out April even and waiting until your system is a little more obsolete. I only replaced my 866 Mhz PIII on the eve of the 3.2C's introduction.
