I purchased an i5 2500k because i found it cheap and wanted to begin a build soon. I have bought nothing else, as i am still researching. From the looks of it, so much new stuff is coming out, should i just run the system off of the onboard graphics until more of the 7000 line is out, and Nvidia does... whatever they're doing?
 
if you can wait for a few until Kepler (end of Q2 I've heard), then you should wait. 7900's are extremely expensive right now.

Untrue in this case. Its so close to next gen its silly to not wait since he has integrated to hold him over. If he buys now he'd regret it when the new stuff launches.
 
end of q2 isn't a "short" wait, then when Nvidia lets kepler out, people will say "wait for the amd refresh"

It's all guesswork and hearsay at this point.

However, it's worth noting that the prices for many cards have come down enough from their original MSRP that -- assuming history repeats itself -- buying a discounted card now will net you the same price/performance ratio as when the next gen comes out. Although heat/power will be higher across generations.

Examples? Primarily on the AMD side, but 6850, 6870, and 6950 are all very much below their MSRP. Nvidia is a lot more stingy with their prices over time, but a good deal is a good deal. If you look at the leaked specs on the AMD side, a 7870 is (on paper) equivalent to a 6970 with lower power draw. The 6970 never really dropped below MSRP, and yet the MSRP of the 7870 is still $300 -- only $50 less than the current price of the 6970.

Personal historical example: I had the opportunity to buy a 5770 when it first came out, but a new 4870 was slightly faster and slightly cheaper.

TLDR: Unless you're gunning for the high end, the midrange AMD cards are cheap enough right now that you gain little by waiting. On the Nvidia side, new generations do yield a better price/performance ratio because they stay so close to their MSRP.
 
Since you got a good deal out of your i5, you should try to maximize it by completing your build now. Otherwise, the savings you gained however large or small, is lost by you waiting for months to have a video card to take advantage of it. Value of a computer is like cars. The moment it exchanges hands from the dealer to you, it has lost half of its value.

Now, if you don't care about that and care more about performance, then I would wait because it's so very close to Kepler release. If you're going to drop $500~$600 just on a GPU, you want something to compare it too so that you know exactly what you're getting.

Then again, there is always something new on the pipeline. By the time Kepler comes out, AMD might be ready for a refresh like others have pointed out in this thread. Ivy Bridge might be getting ready to come out too and you end up reading [H] reviews with a IB+7970/Kepler. AMD might also lower the cost of 7970 to compete with Kepler which will wipe out the discount you got with i5.

Dude, just buy a card, if you want to upgrade later on then sell the card. I don't know if your aware but GPU's actually have decent resale value and usually sell pretty quick.
 
I was looking to go pretty high end, as in 6990 or 7970, assuming i can also find a good price on one. I suppose I still do have time before i actually complete this anyway. I should probably start with the case, psu, mobo, and ram. Hopefully some HDD prices will come down soon as well, or i might just grab a SSD and wait for a good deal on a hard drive as well.


What are the rumors regarding AMD's new cards? I know they are advertising their new capability of cramming more transistors into a smaller area, which they seem to be very proud of.

What is coming up with Nvidia? What is the deal with Kepler?

If he can wait that long, then he isn't a gamer and doesn't need a video card.... If he waits for anything I would say 1-2 weeks for the 7950 release. Most people seem pretty pleased with their 7970s (mine shows up tomorrow) but the price/performance is probably overkill for a lot of people.

well I am more looking to get into pc gaming. Cheaper, better looking, and so on. Plus I love tinkering. I may even watercool this system in the future.
