well, after pricing out my new rig at just under $600 (athlon64, case, cd-rw, etc.), I thought perhaps I could stretch the life on my current system for cheap. here is what i came up with:
current mobo/cpu: Asus A7V133 rev. 1.05 and Athlon 800 (T-bird)
so I was digging around to see what CPU's this board can take and I found that this particular mainboard can take a AthlonXP 2100+.
so i figure a AthlonXP2100+, another 256MB ram to get me up to 512MB and a new HSF just in case my old one can't handle the newer processor.
the upgrade come out to about $130 which seems awfully good to me.
anyone have experience using newer CPU's on these old boards that are made for the 100/133Mhz FSB and PC133 RAM? any tips for the upgrade? I already flashed the BIOS to make sure I was ready for the upgrade.
