shortening floppy cables

well, what i wanted to do was shorten a floppy cable. but im having the hardest time getting of the black connector type. can i take off that connecter, cut the cable, then reconnect it? i know i would have to keep the little flip in the cable, but is this possible, or do i need to go get a new connector. help would be appreciated.
 
It's doable but it's kinda hard, i did it once with a 40 pin cable, succeeded on third attempt.
Might be more difficult with floppy cable as there are those 7 twisted "threads", but on the other hand theres not as many threads.

Be sure not to shorten it too much as you might need more room for several attempts.

j/k .... i do that with dual connector ones ... as far as actually resplicing every effin pin .... id rather buy a new shorter cable
 
yeah, i took it apart, im going to just go buy a shorter cable. it had a nice sleeve on it, so ill take that off and use it on something else. thanks
 
IDC connectors of various pin counts generally require a special crimper
and what your asking isnt a very common user mod, getting all the little forked pins to connect with the wires is alot easier said than done, Id highly recommend just buying a shorter cable, its far cheaper than the tool that makes it reasonably easy.

FDD Cables are about as primitive as it gets in a computer for signalling
but there can still be issues since its not a terminated cable
its alot more important in PATA, especially the higher speeds

What MadJuggla9 described will generally work for both FDD, ATA33, ATA66\100\133 cables, but really increases the reflections from the end of the cable, and while IDE is a very robust standard and the devices are able to shout through the noise, it can impact data integrity and since IDE hides errors and resends the data it can even effect performance (on a HDD)
