Here's a good one for ya...

I am/was working on a build for a friend of mine. P4 prescott system. Here's the specs:

3.0 ghz prescott (socket T)
2x512 mushkin DDR at 400mhz
WD raptor 74 gig
Old GeForce2 video card (not a gaming computer)
Audigy 2 platinum
Other odds and ends

Anywhere, here's the deal. I had the system all done and good to go, but the mobo i grabbed didn't have any firewire capability. Now, the Audigy 2 has a front 5.25" panel with a firewire port on it. Not having worked with the audigies much (at all), I somehow missed the plug in the audigy card that hooked the firewire port up. So I just figured alright, i'll get an add-on PCI firewire card with an internal pinout header, and hookup the firewire port of the audigy that way. I went and got the pinout diagram for the firewire pinout on the board, and matched up the wires from the audigy 2 plug by moving some of them around in the plug. I noticed the plug had 2 extra grounds that the internal header didn't have. No big deal, I thought, since there was still a ground that was being hooked up. There's always extra grounds on these things that arn't used, right? Maybe? Well, I hooked it all up, turned it on, and heard some crackling. The system was booting up fire, but all of a sudden I smelt burnt solder. Powered it off to find that the audigy firewire wire going to the front panel was pretty damn hot, and the firewire card fried what I assume to be the voltage pin on the PCI connection, along with the cooresponding part of the PCI slot. I'll post pictures later today.

So my question is... what do you guys think I all fried? I didn't think that there was that much voltage running through that firewire pinout! Any other thoughts on the situation?

damn you owe ur buddy a new mobo.

I'd test each and every part individually if I were you. Thats your only solution
 
Just the firewire card, if you're lucky. Other possibilities:

1) The PCI slot
2) All PCI slots
3) The mobo
 
Yeah, one of those days my brain stopped working, I guess.

I'm sure that at least the PCI slot it was in is cooked. I'm betting the mobo is cooked. I've tested the ram and PSU, those both seem to be fine. I'm going to snap some pictures right now, then see if I can get the mobo to post.
 
here's a pic of the back of the card. Post-mortum.

Notice what I believe to be the power PCI pin is totally cooked. Notice also where the trace from that pin goes.

Here's the front side. That cooked thing (diode?) is the other end of the fried trace from the backside.
 
Well, I ripped the system apart and tested components. From what I can gather, the power supply is the only thing that fried. I swapped my Tt 420W power supply in it, and she's rock solid.

So it looks like sans one Allied 450W. Could have been much worse.
