Let's say I have 3 harddisk with existing data on it (movies, music etc.) on ntfs and now Ive built a new esxi 5.0 machine, and I want to create a file server vm to manage that 3 harddisk on another build. How do I go about doing it?

Can I use Ubuntu/openfiler as an iscsi target so my esxi vm can manage the drives? Or do I need to start from scratch and get new harddisk, set up file system and transfer the data over?

I've read that esxi can do raw device mapping, but I've also heard that the chances of corrupting file using rdm is higher.

Any solution would be welcome, hopefully I don't need to wipe out all the data in the 3 existing harddisk.

Thanks!
