A buddy of mine is giving away two of these and was wondering if I wanted them to goof around with. I have absolutely zero experience with SGI machines, but I do like messing around with new hardware. I also, on occasion, re-sell stuff he gives me, so should I pick them up and play with them / re-sell them, or are they not even worth it at this point? I'm not sure of processor speed/ram, but as he worked in a high-end medical imaging company, I can only assume they are decent (for the time, and for the machines, as the max is like 250 mhz anyway).

Thoughts? Ideas? Bananas?

The SGI Irix stuff is just a Unix machine, its nothing terribly fancy.

SGI is falling behind the game relatively fast we have an Onyx 3000 here at work, and I can vouch it is nothing special. It can do some neat treaks, but its horribly inefficent. Even with some decent textures, the graphics power is just not there.

To keep up they have to make new machines, but people do not want to continue to make 200k purchases every year, when 100 1k purchases are easier and faster to work on, IE PCs.

You can run linux on because getting a new copy of irix is an expensive.

Other then that the indigo r4400 is getting quite old now it has roughly as much processing power as a p2 depending on the speed.
