SG05 CPU cooler help

Hello all,

First off....sorry...

I know there is a thousand SG05 CPU cooler threads but I still have not got a answer from this forum or others.

My stock cooler broke for me C2D so I am using some old heavy, big and loud cooler from my old E6600 PC so I am looking for a replacement.

I wont be overclocking....I just want something that is quiet and runs the same or better then the stock cooler.

I dont want something big and massive as well. Everyone says get the gemineii and stuff but there hugh....I just want something low profile.

I was having a look at my local site (its like new egg for you guys) and I came along this cooler

CPU: C2D 8600
MOBO: ITX Zotac 9300 WiFi
RAM: one 2GB DDr2 standard chip but it has to be in the first slot closest to the cpu
HDD: Using both the 2.5 and 3.5 slots so I cannot move the PSU or HDD cage
GFX: 4850

No, as it interferes with the GPU/chipset heatsink.

If you don't want that big, guess an NT-06 is good, GeminII is the best and you've got the space for it anyway. It's just $4 more than the MeOrb anyway (in USA)
 
Hmm why wont it fit? where did you get the info from?


Also the NT-06 is much larger then this one and has no fan. I rather a fan cpu cooler.


And I am not looking for the best. Iam just after a replacement for the stock cooler htats both small and effective.
 
Silverstone have the NT07, which is supposed to be a little quieter and perform better than the Intel stock cooler, although only by about 3 degrees.
 
There are many threads into this look for the Zotac 9300 WiFi thread, the MeOrb has clearance issues with the northbridge heatsink, it's all here on the forum and I think thermaltake itself confirmed it.

One of the posts about it is here you would need an aftermarket chipset cooler but that would make the whole bundle more expensive

If you want more info about low profile coolers take a peek at this review

Also as i said the GeminII being arguably the best is just $4 more, the NT-06 is larger too, if you want cheap it's nt-07 or get another intel stock cooler
 
If you want cheap, get a GeminII at Cooler Master's store for $8 + shipping.

I think I will go for a geminII fanless.

I would really recommend the GeminII as well (I got it from the CM store, and it was only $19 shipped to central NC, should arrive tomorrow and I can tell you how it works for me on a quad[and I plan to OC a bit, so my heat load should be about 50% higher than yours]) because you can run it passive.
 
Can't a person put thin fans on top of the GeminII? Or would that make it too tall for the SG05 case?
 
The only way you can really put a fan into a SG05/6+GeminII combo is by removing the 3.5" HD cage and installing a fan on that edge of the heatsink (something I might end up doing if - or more like when - I get the Quad).
 
As you can see from the lack of space in the fifth pic here, the only way you can install even a slim fan is if you only have a 2.5" HDD and you remove the 3.5" HD cage.
 
Okay, well, there goes that idea anyway. Only other thing I can think of would be to use a NT06 and mod (use twisty/zip ties or wire) a fan under the heatsink fins and have it blow upward. Not sure if that set up is better than the GeminII or not. Otherwise you'd have to go with a Zalman 8700 or meOrb if you want a heatsink and fan but if the GeminII is better then no sense using either of those.
 
Some time ago I had the same odd idea of having a fan "in the middle" of the NT06, but just seconds after getting it I realized it likely would fail because of the fan hitting the chipset heatsink. Hmm... Unless, a 80mm fan, that might possibly work? Or would it collide with the attachment mechanisms? Can't make head or tails of how it looks like from the topside of the motherboard looking at the manual.

That's an interesting idea, but there could be potential cross airflow issues with the GeminII fan blowing downwards, and with the intake fan so close to it, there may be no air reaching the back of the case.
 
Yeah, it's a tricky thing. Although there's not that much in that side of the case that needs all that much airflow, except for the CPU itself. And the PSU fan should still suck some air out, of course. If I'm getting a Q8400, like it at the moment seems, I'll have to test the GeminII both as passive and with a single fan once I have both items here with me. If I just keep using the E5200, the GeminII is of course fine as passive.
