This is an odd one. I partially formated a SATA WD 160GB drive, ran out of time and had to shut it down. Took it home, and now XP install gives me the "Setup cannot access this disk" when you go to select your partition/create/delete etc (after the F8 screen). I can put the drive in my home system, partion and format it just fine, but as soon as I put it back in the tower it wont detect. I used the same SATA and power cables in both systems so i know the cabling is good and ive tried using different sata ports (there are 4) and the same thing happens. I tried to repair the MBR and that did nothing. Not sure what happened, but I dont want to assume the drive is dead as its brand new, and im thinking there is something ive missed.
 
Wipe the entire partion table, deleting every partition on the disk and reset it to 100% free space, then try again.
 
tried, used WD tool to write zeros to the entire drive and still the same error.
 
Load BIOS defaults
Find out if there is a BIOS update for your mobo (or if it's an add-in SATA host, firmware update)
Run manufacturer diagnostics to make sure the drive is still mechanically sound.
 
ok now im convinced its the board. i can load xp on the drive in my system. it also seems to be impossible to reset the bios, the only option is to load the "optimized defaults" - tried using the clear cmos jumper, that didnt clear it - never trusted those. took the battery out, didnt reset it, cant figure out why - took out the battery and used the clear cmos jumper and it STILL WONT BLOODY RESET THE CMOS - its not plugged in, the ps is off, i really am at a loss and so i guess ill have to get a replacement board =/
