I was just wondering why you guys don't use SETI@Home. I know some poeple like F@H better because of the cause but I think at the least, it should be supported by the [H]orde. Also, I happen to like the BOINC client because it uses both cores with no extra setup and I get a cool SS.
 
I can't speak for the others here, but I personnally feel like I'm doing something beneficial with F@H. As for running SETI, I do not feel it will provide the same societal benefits as folding does.
 
Agreed. I have a greater feeling of accomplishment with the F@H project then with SETI.

Unless the Aliens that we make contact with have the cure for cancer.

Kidding aside, I agree completely. If I have a choice of using my spare CPU cycles to find a cure for cancer and benefit mankind or decode suspicious radio signals from space in the hope that we might make contact with extraterrestrials, I'll try to cure cancer everytime.

Additionally, the folding client doesn't really require that much effort to set it up for dual core, you just have to download one file, copy it to two folders, and run through setup twice. It takes an extra 45 seconds.

As for the SS, I don't use one. A SS only uses extra CPU cycles that could be processing your preferred project, folding or seti. I like to squeeze the maximum performance out of my boxen for the [H]orde :)
 
Alot of us here used to run SETI@Home actually. It has plenty of support, and although I think it would be very interesting to find ET, I think FAH has alot more tangible benefits - there are already 45 scientific papers that have been published based on FAH research.

As a major sci-fi nut, I'd be thrilled if humanity began to find its place among the stars, but I think we have alot of things to fix on our planet first - the diseases studied in FAH.. Cancer, Alzheimer's Disease, Parkinsons, etc. being some of the most important. Aside from FAH, some other DC projects like ClimatePrediction.net (which also runs on BOINC), are more valuable to the human race than SETI@HOME imho..

There is also alot of new technology put into FAH, such as the new GPU client that uses graphics processing horsepower to acheive processing speeds 40X faster than the fastest CPUs on the planet today.

Most of all, while SETI may advance the search for one of humanities ultimate questions forward - Are we alone? - and with no garunteed results at that, it doesnt advance the knowledge of the human race forward in the way FAH does.

I used to do SETI, but like others have said, I feel that FAH is for a better cause.

Good man, I think you'll find that FAH provides a bit more feeling of accomplishment even if it doesn't quite have the coolness factor of searchine for ET's. Like has been stated a lot of us started dc'ing with SETI but have switched to FAH for the potential benefit.

And we do laugh at Marty, but it has nothing to do with SETI. :eek:
 
F@H has shown promise to at least assist or speed up research into cures for diseases that plague us, Seti has shown that space is noisy and ET doesn't want to talk to us.
 
Haha, maybe. But as a possible Astronomy major...well, you get the idea.
 
Wasn't SETI going under just a short time ago? They get finical backing and are good to go?
 
Is BONIC crap? Reading a little over there, seems still having troubles. I tried the client about 6 months ago, couldn't get the stupid thing to do anything.

Right before I got on the FAH bandwagon, I tried the stand alone SETI client. Installing over RDP caused the tray icon to go ape shit for me, one of the reasons I ended up in FAH.

seti is for little kids. Men (and women and moose) fold!

In the end, there is a limited number of computational resources available. Given the extreme largeness of "space" I really don't think that listening for alien radiosignals is a good use of these limited resources, since the project in itself is quite "open ended". While the "goal" of F@H is far out, there is at least a goal and an end in sight. It may take another 50 years of current CPU power, but eventually there is going to be an end to it.

In other words: P(F@H is done) >> P(SETI is done)
 
There is a good thread here about why we fold. Why we fold instead of doing other things. As a sci-fi geek, I would like to find ET. But I put my money and my time into folding. Much more important to me.

I have had two grandmothers die with Alzheimer's disease. Two grandfathers with cancer. My father has cancer.

I fold for the cure.
 
I got into Folding because of Hard_OCP. I was using the site to explore hardware for a new computer, and ran across the DC forum during the research. I liked the sense of community and the cause.

SETI is a worthy cause. If we knew that earthlings were not alone it could bring us all together...but I doubt it! Any payoffs to SETI are lifetimes away once "contact" is made. For the current generation(s) of earthlings, the two projects supported by the [H]orde seem practical to me. Extending the lifetimes brings SETI reality closer...

Fold on! :)
