server / pc cpu what's the diff

I'm curious about the performance and use differance between a sever cpu like the Zeon, and a desk top like the Core 2. Aside from not having the same socket, if given a quad core with the same speed, fsb, and die size, what sets the two of them apart? Yes I'm a noob, but I don't understand what about them would require seperate types of cpu's.
 
I would say mainly it's the motherboard, and not so much the chip that will determine server/PC. Xeon class processors were mainly to be used in a server environment but can be used in home PC's just fine. Really it depends on the options and project you are working on, and that is where the motherboard comes in.

LGA775 Xeons are exactly the same as Core 2 chips and should work in most standard motherboards. LGA771 Xeons require server motherboards (or Skulltrail, which is effectively a server motherboard), so those are generally out of the question; the difference is mostly the motherboard though, which support different RAM etc. and multi-processor systems.
 
mainly the motherboards.. which are generally manufactured to have better tolerances when it comes to power distribution..
