There are a bunch of these threads but I'm still unsure as to what I need for a processor and hard drives for best capabilities.

I'm looking to run 1-4 systems. Mix of Server 2008/2003. Current plans are for Domain controller, Exchange server, Client. This is purely for test of new programs/operating systems.

My current shopping cart:

(3) Western Digital Caviar Blue WD1600AAJS - in Raid 5
ASUS P6T WS PRO
Kingston ValueRAM 6GB
Intel Xeon W3520

Those are my thoughts - I would definitely be willing to REDUCE my budget but I want to make sure these systems won't be locking up, etc.
 
What kind of processor does that server have and how many machines can you run simultaneously?

Just an FYI, but DL380's are pretty loud even if they're 2U they still put out some noise. Also, finding ones that have VT supported processors might drive the cost up a bit for you as well.

Has two Xeon 3.4 Ghz
8GB ram
2 36gb raid 0
2 146gb raid 0
dual Nics

I have like 6-8 i believe.

Windows 2003 server acting as Active Directory and DNS. Centos web server, Windows 7 machine and windows xp.


QHalo right, They are VERY Loud, I have it in my garage and can hear it through the wall. My parent nick named it Helicopter.. :p

Don't leave it run 24 7 either. Shut it down so parent won't kill me for power bill.

Also doesn't support VT Technology. So no 64bit operating systems. :(
