Serial Experiments Lain Laptop Mod

((This is a mod of a Compaq Armade 7400 laptop. Eventually, it will wind up looking like the navi from Serial Experients Lain.))

This is not a highpowered computer, however, I'll be doing most of the hacks to the os us LaimWM, a highly modified copy of FreeBSD available here: http://lainos.sourceforge.net/

I'll be using most of the parts from the armada, with a few exceptions:

** Keyboard will be external
** Mouse will be external
** cable for video will be extended.

This laptop's case was already repainted, and it's -almost- a shame to have to take it apart and lose that paintjob, but it has served me well for years and I don't feel that bad.

This is my first full-case build, and so I'll definetly be looking for ideas, hints, opinions and advice on how to build it. Now, onto the design.

((All designs were created and rendered using Blender))

... Ok, so I'm having trouble using only 1 monitor to do this...

I'm also considering modding a palm M130 to resemble the handheld Navi. Why the cheap M130? Simple- I have it lying around.

So, what do you all think of this idea? Doable? Crazy? Stupid?

CrimandEvil is so going to hate you for finishing an SE Lain mod before he does ^_-

I love the idea, though. SE Lain is one of my favourite series, and it sounds like this project would honour it :)

Ok, plans are complete (more or less gave up on the blender models and used an autoCAD), now I just need to determine materials, find them, and start building. I was considering using engravers plastic and renting time on a CNC machine, however, those can make CAD look easy and I'm not sure if the plastic could stand up to the heat of a computer. It would be much easier in the end, as I could burn out a couple of the things, and I could dye the engravers plastic easily.

My other real option is sheet metal, which has it's own problems, like welding, mounts, procurement and design, and ability to paint it easily. However, it would be much more durable and resistant to damage.

What are your opinions?
