Selecting a digital camera

I am going to get a new digital camera this black friday, but I need some help in selecting one. Some things I'm looking for:
  • At least 5mp
  • Decent zoom
  • Video with audio
  • Small and lightweight
  • Can take pictures quickly and/or
  • Has an option to take a bunch of pictures in rapid succession (my old one can take 8 pics then takes a while to write them to the card)

I don't know what brands are good to get besides Olympus, Sony, or Nikon. I don't know what numbers to look for on how fast it takes pics, but faster is better cause I take tons of action shots. For zoom, I remember my professional photographer friend telling me digital zoom sucks, optical zoom is the way to go, but I don't know what a decent optical zoom is for cameras. I'd like something that I will be able to tell I am zooming in, but it doesn't have to be high end.

Also, it has to be sturdy. I will probably drop it once a month, stick it in my jeans pockets, take to shows, sports games, etc...

Those are pretty much my only needs. I don't think I'm forgetting anything. Links to guides, tips, whatever is useful. I'd like to relearn how to select a good camera instead of just asking for a specific model, but recommendations are also appreciated and helpful.

Thanks a lot!
