I'm getting most info from google searches, and most articles are 2 years old (early 2005) that say SED is coming... mid to late 2006. Ha.

Anyways, just wondering if anyone knew an updated release date and price points... might be worth holding off purchasing a 2nd LCD if they aren't coming until later or will cost too much for the first 2 years to buy.

they keep delaying more and more, because they want to make it a good price for consumers, but lcds are also staggeringly going down in price. it will come out at the end of this year (if they dont push it back again) and will likely be in all retail stores 1Q 08. by this time other companies will be gearing up monitors with laser technology, oled, and a bunch other shit. its gona be a fun time pretty soon. a bunch of different technology battling it out. cant wait

I haven't heard much about laser displays, but I'd be concerned about OLED lifespan since that was a reported problem.

In terms of pricing, will all these techs be more expensive than LCDs?

Hoping for a 24 or 27'' SED for <$1k CAD.

Are you familiar with the phrase "when pigs fly?"

And no, lauching your family farm animals with a trebuchet does not count.

When?- probably not soon enough if you're planning on buying a display in 07. (and possibly 08 and beyond)

How much?- $$$$ most likely.;)

The problem is that they will have to recoup development costs on a new technology while competeing with existing tech that is steadily dropping in cost....unless SED totally blows all the existing technologies out of the water (and not just on spec sheet) then I wouldn't hold my breath until they show up in retail.

They are supposed to be in mass production of 55" 1080P displays in 2008. Pricing will be competitive with 1080p Plasma in that size ($$$$).

They have NO PLANS for SED computer monitors. Maybe when they reduce production costs and start looking for other markets. I would say 2010 at the earliest, 2012 or never as more likely. Seen any Plasma computer monitors lately?

The best way to think of SED, from a marketing perspective, is as better Plasma.

OLED will more likely reach computer montiors. But again I wouldn't wait, because I would expect 2009-2010...

Never wait for new unreleased technology as it is completely pointless. It may never arrive. Only actual shipping product should enter into a buying decision.

Well spoken Snowdog. Canon and Toshiba put on a big show for SED at CES 2005. After that it has been a no show. It looks like Canon is getting more serious about this product but 2008 is the earliest I think we will see it in the US, if then. It is way to early to speculate as to the pricing at this point. If SED does not make it in time to compete with the new large 1080p plasmas I doubt it will make it at all.

i think the most practical thing to look for is an lcd with led backlighting. this isn't a cureall for lcd's problems, but it is better than a ccfl backlight

Snowdog: thanks, cleared up most of my questions.

I really thought this technology was coming sooner, but I didn't realize they aren't even considering computer monitors at this time.

Ugh.

OLEDs/LCD with LED backlight looks promising but again can't buy them yet :T

Doing some checking and the LED backlight thing has been around since 2005 (http://videoediting.digitalmedianet.com/articles/viewarticle.jsp?id=33128) and yet they still aren't on the market yet? What's the holdup?

Since Canon is now alone on SED. I don't think it will happen anytime soon in 2008. Would the consumer buy a SED TV with Canon name on it? Maybe Canon will scale back and put it on their camera?

Great point. Canon has minimal distribution through the Audio/Video Retailer distribution channel and no reputation in the cut throat display market. I wouldn't be surprised to see Toshiba pop back into the picture at some point to deal with exactly these distrubtion and name recognition issues.

I know there supply issues with the PLED / OLED stuff, the material but the brains to drive them (yes, all LCD's have microcontroller driving them) - it's a great technology, but right now it's just not there in volume. A lot of R&D time / money is still being put into LCD technology - it's not going anywhere for a while, look how long CRT's were around...

SED is cool tech too, again, it's going to be awhile before we see true consumer products on either OLED / PLED or SED technology. It will happen, or something similar. It took YEARS for larger LCD panels to come into thier own and that's where the money is being put right now in the manufacturing arena.

Patience...
