second hard drive

Just installed a second hard drive on a PC running Win ME. Second drive was jumpered to be a slave. I was able to pick it up in BIOS as the secondary slave under auto-detect. Both drives show in device manager, one as a type 47, one as a type 80. Only the first drive shows under my computer. I have a CD drive showing as drive 'D'. Is the problem that the cd will not release 'D' for the second hard drive and move to 'E'? Or something else? I appreciate the help.
