I've had a 3TB Barracuda (ST3000DM001) and a 2TB Barracuda (ST2000DM001) fail within 2 months of eachother. In fact, the replacement 2TB drive they sent me also failed within 30 mins! What is going on with these drives?

Anyone else here had issues?

I'm steadily turning towards WD.....
 
I will assume that you are referring to the system in your sig??????
I use dozens of these drives with not a single issue. Hardware and controller are the biggest culprits.

You should be steadily looking into faulty hardware, specifically a faulty SATA controller.

The chances of you having that many bad drives in a row are about nill. You have something else going on.
 
Hows your power? Do your lights dip when someone kicks on the microwave or fridge, or do you share a circuit with your AC? Does your computer ever reboot incidentally? Did you buy them and RMA them from newegg?

Many companies ship drives poorly packaged, in my opinion.

Power AFTER the PSU is a potential issue, before the PSU is not really unless there is a Yumcha brand PSU with no protection.

I disagree. Dips and spikes can have an effect on all the hardware, and even a good AX corsair unit can wear out with frequent voltage dips and spikes.

I work in an old building with retrofitted power and generally over-utilized power panels, and many workstations (which I hand built) with good corsair and antec supplies, that share circuits with devices that produce power anomalies like fridge compressors, vacuums, dirty power with dimming lights and lots of other equipment. Any equipment I place on voltage regulating UPS generally runs without issue (other than the UPS chirping and the occasional battery replacement). Systems straight on power (like when people move their workstations without asking me) I've had iMac's and workstations, and laptop power supplies die in as short of a period of time as 6-12 months.

At home sharing a circuit with a window AC, hair dryer or microwave pulling 10 of your 15 amps of the average circuit will slowly wear out and damage your power supply and the rest of your components.

The rest of my system seems to be fine. No mysterious reboots or power fluctuations (PS and home wiring), hard drives are cooled well. No video card issues, no CPU or RAM issues. The rest of my devices (optical drive, SSD's) check out. I also tried the drives in different SATA ports and switched the SSD's to the HDD ports to see if that had any effect. nil. Don't really know how to check the SATA controller another way.

The 2TB drive I've had for almost 18 months without issue. The 3TB for around 10 months without issue. Both purchased brand new, 2TB from Newegg and the 3TB from Amazon.

I started investigating long term reviews of these specific drives and discovered many were having problems with the 2tb-3tb capacities. Maybe I just got a bad batch and a poorly repaired RMA drive. who knows. Still bummed out :(

Based on work experience where I RMA 10 to 20 drives every single year (out of about 200 that spin 24/7/365) I do not see 3 drives dieing in this short period of time being a guaranty that there is a problem with your system.

In the past 2 years we have had 3 or 4 DOA drives from the Jabil Global Services Mccallen Texas RMA location.

Obviously not scientific since I only have 200 drives (and not 10s of thousands that would be needed to make any kind of statement with statistical significance) however most of our problems are with drives smaller than 2TB.
