I bought a couple Seagate Goflex Home 3T USB 3.0 drives at Costco for $150 (well actually I got the first one for $130 before the flooding) for my NAS. My network wasn't fast enough to even get full performance out of even one and I don't need 3T for my BluRay rips. Anway to make a long story short I cracked one open to see what kind of drive is in them and it is a Barracuda Model: ST3000DM001. Their newer drive with 1T platter density. I benched it on the USB 3 bus and was able to pull 110 MB/sec copy speeds from my WD Black.

Nice find for the price.

Got me the 4TB GoFlex Desk for 250 right after new years. Got a Baracuda Xt 7200rpm in it too. But I was told they werent 1tb/platter yet, still just 800gb (the 4tb is 5 platters)

Its a decent enough drive ripped out of the case, but if you use them as external drives they have one major flaw, use them for more than 5 minutes with any decent activity they get to 150F+. Drive has no active cooling and horrible passive cooling.

I just got two of these recently too, :) They are pretty quick for what I do.

Yea, I had heard the same about the temps. I picked up a few when they were on a deep discount and popped them out to use as bare drives - great drives, but I wouldn't use them in that enclosure extensively without wanting to figure out something to keep them cool.
