I just got this new harddrive, Seagate Baracuda 250GB SATA , OEM from newegg, when i installed windows it said there was only 127GB of space, i didnt partition the drive or anything. Do you think the HD is defective? or do i have to change something
 
Seagate has some sort of proprietardy disk installation software that they reccomend you use, and they claim if you don't you want get as much usable space as the HD is rated for. Idunno, could be part of the problem, but one half the space seems a little extreme.

Totally untrue, do not listen to this.

Make sure you have windows xp sp2 installed (there is no reason why you shouldn't). And read the linked thread, this issue comes up 3 times a week in the storage forum.
