Seagate 400GB Corruption Problem

Hi guys, I just installed a 400GB Seagate PATA drive (7200.8) in one of our servers here and to begin with I had to enable a registry key to get Windows 2000 Server to see over 137GB.

The drive was fine for a few hours - we copied data across with no problem. When we came to reboot and tried to access the drive in explorer Windows displayed a corrupt volume error message and we couldn't access the drive.

After running chkdsk to repair some errors we were able to see the directory structure etc. However on every reboot it seems to be corrupted, and even though I keep running chkdsk it still keeps finding problems on the disk.

Is this an issue with the BIOS, Windows, cabling or the hard disk itself?

What service pack do you have on your server? I presume you followed this KB article: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=305098

If it was BIOS, the computer could not see more than 137GB without a software overlay, so it is not that.

To test the drive, you could try it in a different comptuer (desktop) to see if yout get the same problems.

Thanks for the swift reply. We have Windows 2000 SP4 installed so there shouldn't be a problem there. I read that article a couple of days ago and had to add the EnableBigLba key to the registry to get Windows to see the full available space on the drive.

We can test the drive in another system, but at the moment that is a last resort as the server is in a rack and we are running short of available test systems here at the moment.

Right now I am running the Seagate diagnostics on the drive and it has taken 3 hours so far...
 
Hope there aren't problems with these drives! I've been planning on running these in the file server I am planning on building. Just waiting for some more reviews/reports from people who have them.
 
I figured out what the problem was after some troubleshooting...

Even though ATA100 drives are supposed to be backwards compatible with ATA33 cables, using an ATA33 cable with this drive caused it to corrupt data. Changing the cable for a regular ATA66/100 cable cured the problems.

Yes, that makes sense. ATA 33 is only 40 pin, ATA66/100 is 80 pin.. It would have worked, if in the BIOS you had limited the transfer rate to 33mb/s, otherwise, it can (not always) make a difference and cause the problems you saw.
