I have an opteron 165 and was using the stock hs/f for quite a while, but decided I wanted to OC more. So I bought a scythe ninja a month or so ago, and if anything I'm getting worse temps. Before on stock I would idle at 40C and load at 50C, but now I'm idleing at 45C and loading at 55C. I cant post any pics until the weekend, but are there any common problems that may be causing this? I used arctic silver 5 and the fan on the Ninja is blowing back towards the exhaust fan. I have 3 other fans installed- the setup that comes in the Thermaltake Tsunami. If anyone has any input on what might be wrong please let me know.

Did you get a little arctic silver 5 happy?

Your initial temps with the stock cooler look pretty high to me, and you said that the fan on the ninja is blowing back towards the "intake fan." These two things make me think you have air flow issues. Rear fans are typically exhaust fans, and blowing air through a heatsink at a fan that also blows towards the heatsink won't net much airflow over and away from the heatsink. Unless that was a typo on your part, switch the rear fan to exhaust and see what happens. If still no improvement, try reseating your Ninja and make sure you don't over apply the AS5.

Sorry, meant to say exhaust. And I think I *may* have over applied the AS5, I'll check that out tomorrow morning.

Mine works fantastic. I'd check out your install and see if you are having an issue somewhere...

Did you remember to remove the plastic sheet from teh bottom of the cooler? That's a common mistake, and from what it seems like, you may have left it on.

Yes, I definitely took that off. I just re-applied AS5 with just a little this time and it helped a lot- temps are now 35C at idle and ~45C at load. I still think I could get better- I'm using the fan that came with the ninja, could that be a problem? Do most people buy a new one for it?

I don't know how long you've given it, but AS does take some time to set. If you're seeing 35-45 just after applying, give it a bit more time perhaps? You could technically strap on a faster fan, but the ninja doesn't stand to gain as much as other heatsinks might.

These temps are RIGHT after the new application, I just put it on this morning. How long does it take to set completely? I'll post if temps improve over time.

From the AS5 information section on the AS site:

Due to the unique shape and sizes of the particles in Arctic Silver 5's conductive matrix, it will take a up to 200 hours and several thermal cycles to achieve maximum particle to particle thermal conduction and for the heatsink to CPU interface to reach maximum conductivity. (This period will be longer in a system without a fan on the heatsink or with a low speed fan on the heatsink.) On systems measuring actual internal core temperatures via the CPU's internal diode, the measured temperature will often drop 2C to 5C over this "break-in" period. This break-in will occur during the normal use of the computer as long as the computer is turned off from time to time and the interface is allowed to cool to room temperature. Once the break-in is complete, the computer can be left on if desired.

It depends on what you are doing. If you run a burn in program it will set faster than if you just do some regular use for a few days. I think you might be able to run prime95 over night to set it up. I'm not an expert on this, but I would think you might see a 1-2C difference after it sets up.

edit: I posted in between the guy above me, but apparently you should let it cool from time to time during setup, so it may not be a good idea to blast it on full all the way thought with prime 95. :/
