Scythe Ninja Dissapointment

Well, got my Scythe Ninja revB in and I'm extremely dissapointed. I had the Arctic Freezer 7 Pro in there and replaced it to hopefully get quieter/cooler. I was hoping/expecting a drop of 5 degrees or so and from all the reviews I read that seem very realistic. Instead, I have a INCREASE of 5 degrees :( well, my setup:

e6600
ds3 rev3.3 -f11 bios
4x1gb buffalo firestix
pny 8800gts 320mb
HR-05 sli
Arctic Freezer 7 Pro / Scythe Ninja rev B
antec p182

I've had the above set up running stable (18hrs+ orthos) at:
8x440= 3.52ghz
5-5-5-15
1.4812vcore
2.2v ram

So, with the AF7pro I had idle temps of 34 deg and max load temps of 59 deg.

Got my Ninja yesterday, put it on using some Arctic Silver 5 with the Ninja's suggested directions of covering the entire CPU and had idle 36/load 72 deg! Was thinking this is way too high, I musta did something wrong.

Did some googling and came to the conclusion that I was using too much Arctic Silver (some posts say that using too much thermal compound could insulate your CPU and raise temps rather than help transfer the heat). So, I then removed the Ninja, cleaned off all surfaces with 99% isopropyl and followed Arctic Silver 5 directions of placing only a thin line in the center of the heatspreader between the 2 cores. I now have an idle of 34/load of 64. While this is certainly better, I was expecting it to be lower than my AF7pro.

Now, I'm thinking of trying again using the thermal compound that came with the Ninja.

Ninja owners: If you have had good results with your Ninja, did you use the thermal compound that came with the Ninja? Did you spread the compound accross the whole heatspreader? Can you think of anything that might help me?

Well positive note is that it IS a bit quieter than the AF7pro :p

Thanks for any imput.

The fan that comes with the Scythe Ninja is terrible.
Buy a 75+ CFM fan and you will see much better temps.

Yah I've read many reports of better temps with better fans. But stock should still give me better results than the AF7pro wouldnt you think? I wanna get better results like I 'should' first then improve from there.

search for 'scythe infinity mounting mod' and give that a shot.

Again, I'm trying to address why I'm not getting better results from the ninja when I 'should'

After or IF I get results from the Ninja that I think are fair then I'll continue to improve upon that. I dont see a reason to spend more money just to get the Ninja to where the AF7pro is when I can just go back to the AF7pro. But thanks for the imput.

How is that going to make it quieter that before??

I'm running a 1000RPM fan on my Ninja for somewhat cool and quiet operation at 3.2GHz and getting temps around 35C idle / 63C load. Once i have gotten the built in caseheater (8800GTS) up and running for a few minutes my case is around 40C and thus that's where I'll idle... Just ordered a ThermalRight HR-03 Plus for the GFX card hopefully that will lead to cooler and a bit quieter opration in combination with a 120mm fan.

Scythe Ninja plus should perform better than a Zalman9700 that I have on my e6420 (i have the ninja in my p4 system). With my e6420 at 1.5375v and 3.44 ghz, my processor cores sustain a 65 Celsius peak. This is with ambient temperature at 80F. The scythe should not be worse than this. On my old p4 northwood overclocked from 2.8 to 3.34ghz with +0.05 on voltage, the cpu would idle around 40C and peak at low 60s.

i have good results for my ninja. used the fan that came with it. idle 32 on a cooler day and around 38 on a warm day. (celcius) and load around 50. i used a rice grain size of my antec formula 5

Sounds like poor contact to me between the CPU to the HS.

So here is a shot of my q6600 installed in the MB with AS5 right before I added the HS. It shows the right amount in my opinion given a lapped HS and CPU (which is a thicker line than I used before); the red triangle I drew shows where that tag is on the CPU, remember that on quad core chips, the dies are placed in a different located relative to a dual core, see the instructions on AS5's website for more) and make sure you're reading the DUAL CORE instructions:

You may also have a convex/cave IHS on your CPU and/or a convex/cave base on your HS. You may want to lap them to flatten out the surfaces. Here is some food for thought about lapping: my before/after temps. I first just did the HS which brought them down a little. I then did the IHS on the CPU and brought them down even more:

Here are links to the two threads I started, with pics:

Let us know what you end-up doing.

Lap the Ninja. I had to as well. Same exact issue. I had a Frezer64 pro, got the Ninja at a good price. Put it on and the temps were the same!!!!
Put the Freezer back on.
Got my core 2 and all i had for an aftermarket cooler was the ninja. Intalled it and couldnt overclock worth a damn.
Checked the bottom of teh ninja with a straight edge and it was pretty concave. Checked teh cpu- same deal. Lapped the ninja and now i run at 3.15Ghz default Vcore on my E4300. Temps are down 5-10C under load.
