I am going to go SCSI on my server, and i need suggestions. I'm on a tiny budget :( [40$ and lower for a pci controller {willing to go ISA} and 1 drive]
Please make a suggestion for a type of SCSI [like SCSI 1 or something cheap, yet not slower than ide-100]

Thanks

Not happening.

You're better off saving up the money to do SCSI properly or just sticking with IDE.

Otherwise, you'd have to get extremely lucky on a FS forum or eBay.

Like he said, no. A $100 modern IDE or SATA drive will perform way better than a $40 controller and a $60 scsi disk. Or even a $100 scsi disk. It takes a lot to exceed the speed of IDE these days (remember, mass production -> cheap) but once you do the speeds (especially latencies) get really good.

Basically, sorry, stick to IDE. Maxtor's DiamondMax/Maxline series, or Seagate's 7200.7 (the .8's are meh, and the .9's haven't been out long enough to tell).

lol, when they scour ebay trying to find a scsi rig for $40! :D

I had basically typed that even going back 3 generations to 80mb/s U2W will set the OP back around $100 for anything decent and that the benefit of longevity would be minimized or gone since the drives would likely be pulls... and that ebay drives could come with questionable packing / bodyslams by the delivery guy for no extra charge.

I'm serious about the SCSI thing so don't make fun of me

That may be, but for the prices you are talking about, the SCSI setup will be much slower than a new IDE hard drive. MUCH MUCH SLOWER.

Just get a new IDE/SATA hard drive, and if you are worried about reliablity, get one designed for server - nearline use, like the Maxtor Maxline III or the WD RE2. These drives will be much faster than an old SCSI setup.

Can you increase your budget?? - say in the $200 range...if so you can get a decent controller and a 15k rpm 9.1 (new) not a lot of storage but it would be fast..

Beyond that go with SATA - it's basically as fast as SCSI and is the 'current' technology.

I cant go $200 on video card and waterblocks. I guess i could go IDE just if there was a controller that had 4+ channels for cheap. That budget thing again :( :( :( .

I wasn't making fun of you... More like taking a small shot at myself for looking on ebay with a $40 budget. I had found, and originally posted, an adaptec 2940U2W controller (which is a solid but old card) for $25 shipped and a 9GB WD U2W 10K RPM drive for $28 iirc along with a warning about said equipment.

1 - Thats still 'over budget' and not up to the minimum performance standard you've laid down. Quite frankly not suitable for anything other than replacing components from an existing setup or playing around with if you have money to piss away imo.

2 - If you are on a $40 budget, it would hurt much more to end up with a bad drive or card (all sold as-is of course).

3 - I'd hate to see someone throw away their last fourty bucks on a setup that is possibly on its last legs.

Maybe you should re-evaluate why you think you need a scsi setup. For that kind of money you'll likely end up with junk if you can find anything at all.

i got it working for 10$, ultrawide scsi2, got a mylex controller, and 10000rpm drive and a 2 connector cable for 10$!!!!!! i'm amazed with the speed, 9.1GB slow format in 3 seconds!!!!
:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

[i'm obviously really happy!]

i know but still, in windows it's access light was flashing about once a second, when the ide's was solid on! while transferring large files

hehe i'm only 13 and got scsi working, when a lot of people say it's too much work! :D :D :D happyhappyhappy
