SCSI RAID Gurus needed!

Please help me configure my SCSI RAID 1 array. After hours of trial and error, I still can't get the RAID bios to see my second scsi drive. I'm not quite sure where to put the jumpers. I've set up a SCSI RAID array before, but it was with 68-pin drives, with the jumpers on the front of the drive. I'm trying to do something a little different this time: Use 2 80-pin drives with 68-pin converters.

What I have:

1 PCI Adaptec U160 Raid controller
2 80-pin Seagate U320 drives
2 80-pin to 68-pin converters
a bunch of jumpers

There are jumper positions on the front of the 80-pin drives, as well as jumper positions on the 80-68pin converters. There are no other SCSI devices on the system. The scsi cable works, and i have the drives at the #2 and #4 hookup, with the #4 position being the last on the cable, where it then gets terminated.

I read the Adaptect docs for setting up my array, but it obviously doesn't tell me where to put my jumpers on the Seagate drives. I also checked the Seagate drive docs, and it doesn't tell me how to position the jumpers for a RAID setup. ARGH!!!!

Please help...

generally speaking... if it wont see the drive at the end of the cable, it isnt being terminated properly.
 
I don't think it's a termination issue -- I looked closely at the 'black plastic thing' and it says scsi terminator. I connected some 68-pin drives that I have slated for another server (hence the reason I can't use them in this server), and the RAID controller sees both drives just fine. The 68 pin drives are connected at #2 and #4 as well. One drive is set to ID0 and the other to ID1. I tried that configuration on the 80-pin drives, but I think the adapters are what is causing the issue... ?
 
There's a chance, but have you tried, say, setting the drives to ID3 & ID 5 or somesuch yet?

It's been aeons since I've done SCSI, but, I'm thinking ID0 is reserved?

It's worth a try until someone gives you a better suggestion though : )
 
Ok, I got it to recognize the drives. The trick is to set your drive SCSI IDs using jumpers on the drives, but do not put jumpers on the 80 to 68 pin converters at all. I think I fried one of my drives when trying different converter jumpers. It shows up as 'failed' when I put it back in another array. oops! :eek:

I looked for docs on the converters, but it only returned poorly translated Japanese web sites. Oh well...

You need jumpers on the adaptors to set the id's. All you need to do is make sure the neither drive has the same id as the controller.

You should not need to put any jumpers on the drives. The ones on the front controll id but that really should be set by the adaptor. The ones on the side controll settings you don't need to mess with at all. If you are really curious seagate has almost all the manuals online and it details what those jumpers do. Things like delayed start up and write cache disable. On 80 pin SCA drives the id setting is typically controlled by the backplane which in your case is the 80 to 68 adaptors.

I would be really surprised if setting the jumpers on the adaptor caused a problem.

I thought the jumpers on 80-pin drives control functions other than the SCSI ID. I was under the impression that only 68-pin drives actually had jumpers to set ID's with and that was why 80->68pin converters had jumpers for SCSI ID. If you did play with the jumpers on one of the 80-pin drives you should probably get the manual for that drive and put them back to factory default. I bet your "failed" drive just has a misconfigured jumper or something.

In general the 80 pin drives are set on the the back plane through the connector. It appears some seagate drives have an additional set of jumpersr up front to allow the id setting. I guess this is for completely passive drive planes or something like that.

For the side(options) jumpers almsot always default is no jumpers present but get the manual to double check.
