Scsi probs :( Plz help

Hi

I have the following scsi hardware:

Drives:
4x 36gb IBM Ultrastar 10k U160 SCA
9gb Fujitsu 7.2k U160 68pin

Controllers:
Adaptec AHA-2940
Adaptec AIC-7880H on-board PII server board
Adaptec AIC-7899W on-board PIII server board

Cable:
Amphonol (SP) 4 point twisted U160 with active term
68-80pin adapters

I can't get the ibm drive(s) to work with the PIII server board, they work with old 2940 card and the PII board. When I connect them to the PIII board they do not even spinup no matter what their "auto spin" is set to.

The PIII board sees the fujitsu drive no problems. The 68-80pin adapters iam using does not say the speed they can handle but they dont have "term" jumpers so i presume they can handle atleast U80?. I have also set in the scsi bios of the PIII to use 10 and even 5 mb/s transfer rates but they still don't see the ibm drives, yet they work at 40mb on the PII board.

What could be the problem? I need to fix this asap because I have to use the hdds this weekend.
 
Did you check for termination at both ends of the chain? Also did you check the bios to make sure teh scsi stuff is enabled on teh p3 board?
 
Yes as I stated the cable has a active terminator at its end and I have checked the scsi bios of the PIII board to confirm that the controller is terminated.

And yes the scsi is enabled on the board, its *does* see the 9gb fujitsu hdd but not the ibms.

Any other thoughts?

Try jumpering the 68-80 pin adapters to "delayed" or "remote" startup. Also see if the drives can do a staggered spinup, that is to set each one to start up one at a time. Jumpers will probably set the interval here.
 
Also, you may want to check and see if there is a firmware update available for the IBM drives.
 
Just a thought, but could it be incompatible types of SCSI?

i mean, like LVD, SCSI 1, SCSI 2, SCSI 3, etc...

i have some LVD drives that won't run on non LVD boards.

have you tried using only 1 IBM drive at a time to see if it works on the PIII board?

Is the "Initiate Startup" for the drives enabled in the SCSI bios? If not, turn it on and see if the drives will spin up.
 
Is there anything crazy set on the IBM drive jumpers like "force single ended"? Also, there may be a firmware/BIOS update for the non-working controller that addresses bizarre issues with particular IBM drives, have you investigated that?
