SCSI Problem.

Switched from a Western Digital 80Gb 8MB drive to a nearly IBM 18GB 10000RPM with an Adaptec 2940UW. The performance seems to decreased by alot. I installed the scsi and card normally, not editing anything. Is there anything that I need to do?
 
what model IBM?

rotational speed isnt everything
for instance the areal density is likely much lower
 
speed in what? general performance or benchmarks? is this a recent drive or like 3 years old?
 
well a recent drive wouldnt be an IBM
they sold the division to Hitachi
 
Is your SCSI channel terminated? Does each device have a unique ID? Is the SCSI card's BIOS set to have the drive transfer at U160? How did you install the card's driver? Best bet is to re-run Windows setup and press F6 when prompted for third-party storage drivers (e.g. RAID, SCSI, SATA).

Also find out the exact model of the drive (e.g. Z15?) and look it up at www.storagereview.com's Performance Database. While you're at it, look up that WD for comparison. SCSI drives tend to outperform ATA drives of the same period, but at times modern ATA drives will outperform older SCSI drives.
 
A 2940UW is only ultra wide so thats max 40 mb/s plus I am guessing that is a pretty old IBM drives which where never too fast to begin with.
 
that scsi card is only capable of transfers of 40MBps if your 80 gig is ide then it would seem like performance sucks, because ti does.

ebay sells good cards, look for one at least 160MBps and get a drive that works at that speed.

as for your current drive just type the model number into google and you should have everything you need to know about the drive in the first 3 or so links. for example if the drive is capapable of 40mbps its comparable to the performance of a 33mb ide drive (unless raid is involved)

ebay is your best bet, non-raid scsi cards go for pretty cheap.
 
LSIU160, favorite bare SCSI card i've ever owned, and it can be found for less than $50
