SCSI n00b needs help!

Symbios Logic 53C875J PCI SCSI card
18.2GB Wide Ultra 2 SCSI drive(Fujitsu MAE3182lp)
P6SBA motherboard /w P3 700

Just a test system I threw together, and I am tying to install XP.
I have just the CD and SCSI drive hooked up, and the XP installer finds it and I can partition/format and begin to install, but when it restarts for the first time, it can't boot from the SCSI to continue the installation.

I have the first boot device set to SCSI in the bios, but what am I missing?
 
Make sure you have the ID jumpers set correctly on the drive, and that the scsi card's BIOS knows which ID to boot from.

I am so lost here.

Is there a driver or something I have to load first, becuase the only BIOS setting I can get to is the boot order, that is the only place SCSI shows up anywhere.

I have 0 experience with SCSI drives and such if you can't tell :p
 
sounds like you need to load a device driver at te very beginning of the install.
 
The SCSI card has a BIOS as well as the Motherboard, so wait longer in the boot process and it will tell you how to get into the SCSI card's BIOS. (Ctrl A for adaptec cards)

In there you need to be sure that the boot target ID is the same as the SCSI ID of the HD.. (usually ID:0 LUN:0 )

Make sure in the SCSI bios that the HDD is set as a boot drive. This setting will be in the device properites page.

Edit - After doing more research I found the card doesn't have a BIOS and I guess only works in a Compaw machine. How the fuck can I get around this?
 
I've got two different SCSI cards.

WindozesXP finds my LSI cards hard drives and can format them.
So I dont need to hit F6 at the start of the install with that card.
Ctrl-C gets into the bios.

WindozesXP cannot find the drives on my Adaptec card.
So I need to hit F6 to load the SCSI drivers.
Ctrl-A gets into the bios.

As you can format the drive it sounds like you may not need to hit F6 as Windozes all ready has the drivers needed.

What is the SCSI id number of your drive.
Underneath the drive should be a bank of four jumpers named "ID BIT 0" to "ID BIT 3" or something similar.
This is where in binary you set the drives ID.
Start with them all off to give you an ID of zero as this is the most common boot ID.
If that dont work then try id's 1 to 6.
& tends to be your SCSI card so don't try that.

Well, sadly, you won't be able to boot from a SCSI drive if the controller doesn't have an on-board BIOS. The only way around this is to get a SCSI controller with a BIOS.

You're right, Windows XP should have a bundled drive for all LSI SCSI controllers except those based on the 53C1030 or 53C1020/1020A, so F6 should not be necessary to install on the 53C875 based controllers.
 
Can you guys get MS to put the 53C1010 drivers in Win2k's next service pack? Seriously, this is getting annoying with the floppies, and all attempts I've made at manually hacking the driver database have failed.
 
make sure your motherboard BIOS is setup to have SCSI as one of the boot devices in the "boot order" options, or enable "try other devices for boot"
 
Try and find a used Adaptec 2940U or UW. I've got one in each of my machines (all my machines boot from a SCSI drive) and WinXP installs and loads fine with no extra drivers or anything.

Heh, sadly we have no control over what drives MS bundles (other than making sure we provide the latest version when they are ready to make a new bundle...)
