SCSI drives not detected

I have a trio of Fujitsu MAT3073NP 73GB u320 68 pin 10k RPM SCSI drives I recently purchased off eBay and am attempting to use them via a Mylex Acceleraid 170 PCI SCSI card. However, the card can't seem to detect the drives. I have a 4 port cable connecting the three drives plus a terminator on the 4th port.

I had 3 Seagate 18GB 15k RPM drives installed before (2 were 80 pin with 68 pin adapters and 1 was a 68 pin) and they worked great.

Is there a problem since my SCSI card is u160 and the drives are u320? Is there something I'm missing? I'm still fairly new to the world of SCSI.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

make sure the jumpers for scsi ID on the drives are set correctly, my fujitsu 320 drives work fine on my adaptec 160 card.

What snake said plus sometimes (on some drives) when on some controllers you might also need to set the "remote start" enable jumper on the drives for them to spin up in time for the controller to detect them. Also make sure none of the drives have a temination power jumper set since your cable is providing the termination. Probably the SCSI ID's though...

See the below link for the jumpers configuration for that drive.\

I was wondering about jumpers but my drives didn't come with the actual jumper, just bare pins. Any place that sells just the jumper connector itself?

So from that link you provided I need to jumper pins 23 and 24.

No. Do not jumper pins 23-24. You will want to jumper pins 11-12 on all three drives. Then on the first drive also jumper pins 1-2, then on the next drive jumper pins 3-4, then on the third drive jumper 1-2 and 3-4. You may also need to change this depending on what SCSI ID your existing SCSI drive is using if you plan on also keeping that drive installed. The jumpers will either be standard or micro. Take the drive to a local mom and pop computer shop, they will probably have some jumpers laying around they would give you but they need to be the right size.

I got the card to recognize the drives successfully.

I jumpered pins 1-2 on the second drive and 3-4 on the third.

I then successfully installed VMWare ESX on the RAID 5 array but now the system won't boot to it. It gets past the IRQ screen in the BIOS and hangs.

Here's the system specs.

AMD 3800 X2 at 2.4GHz
Asus A8N-E Ultra mobo
2x512MB Patriot PC3200
3x73GB Fujitsu SCSI in RAID 5 on Mylex Acceleraid 170 with VMWare ESX installed
3x500GB Seagate 7200.10 in RAID 5 on Adaptec 2610SA formatted with VMFS

This same board used to boot fine when I had only one RAID card in it and 3x18GB drives in RAID 5 running VMWare ESX. I guess the other RAID card might be screwing something up. I'll try removing it tonight.

Any other ideas?

I believe so.

Hard drive is first boot device and of those I have "bootable add in card" listed as the first hard disk to boot to and "Dell Cerc SATA/150" as the second bootable hard drive.

VMWare boots up fine without the 2610SA installed.

I'm still fairly new to server hardware so I'm trying to learn as much as I can by building my own.

I'm just glad I found the solution quickly so I can begin migrating all my physical servers to this VMWare box.
