Screen Gone Black

Hi, Recently my friend had a laptop adn the screen went black on him. So he went out and bought a enw one and gave me the bad laptop. It's a Gateway solo 9550. Upon closer inspection i saw taht the screenw asnt completely black just that it was really really dark. So i'm wondering is there somekind of light or something that just burnt out and can it be replaced for less then 50 dollars? and could i do it myslef?
